Expansions are back, but what makes them great?

Ninja_Tino

Joyous article. The brevity of most DLC, no matter how great, and its proximity to the vanilla game's release date, always underwhelms me. There was always a great feeling of playing an expansion pack, with the opportunity to sink your teeth back into a game world you perhaps haven't explored in a few months. I think that's what does it for me - drawing me back in. I remember loving Shivering Isles, as it introduced me to a large quest on a completely new map, but with the beloved gameplay systems I hadn't experienced in a while. Was far more fulfilling than any of the DLC (except Horse Armour, obviously).

Minecraft PS3 worlds will transfer to PS4, possibly Vita

@captain-neilw Just depends on the setup. If you're not primarily a PC gamer, chances are it's just a desktop in an uncomfortable corner. Us console kids enjoy ruining our posture on a soft bed or sofa. Plus, young kids generally prefer consoles, a huge market for Minecraft.

Top class game, top class review. Been playing it in bursts since this morning. The purposeful floatiness and slidy controls make it ideal for the generally unresponsive nature of touch-screen controls. Lovely design.

Ninja_Tino

@melnificent Plot-wise, you're going to be very confused, but, then again, playing other games might not alleviate that. It's a nice place to start, as it's a cracking game in it's own right. It's not necessarily indicative of the series as a whole, given the open-world overhaul and refined gameplay; but I suggest if you enjoy that you pick up the HD Collection. It's cheap, and Metal Gear Solid 3 then Peace Walker (The two best games, IMO) will have you keyed up on the plot for Phantom Pain.

That Metal Gear article was pretty good, but obviously incomplete as none of us have any idea what's gonna happen in Phantom Pain. Really, though, the question the article asks is 'Who's more interesting?' and Big Boss wins, hands down.

Games are squandering their potential to truly immerse us

Ninja_Tino

@jimmyhill11 Yeah, great points. I'd say in general I'm swaying more towards your opinion of it. I would've just liked some more dialogue while doing it, even just Joel muttering to himself. TLoU certainly does it better than most.
Totally with you on the Ish stuff, too. There are also other minor details in TLoU which suggest stories without explicitly telling them. Skyrim's saturated. A total mess.
Surprised also that Dark Souls wasn't mentioned for its incredible storytelling. Everyone should check out Rich Stanton's Dark Souls vs. Skyrim article on how DS does so much so right!

I found The Last of Us guilty of this. The immersion was constantly shattered every time Ellie et al. would stand still ready to head to the next area, shouting and shouting, while I mechanically checked every drawer, cupboard and dresser for necessary resources. I think in this instance it could've been fixed with some added dialogue, e.g. Joel saying he's off to scavenge.

That was a treat to read! I'm excited by the hesitant acceptance of these new features. Dark Souls's imperfections make it perfect, no doubt, but I want something more than just a rehash. Will be interesting to see how all these 'modern' upgrades fit. Can't wait!

Ninja_Tino

@Zomeguy You are making it too simple. These are games I can purchase (or spend money on) so a valued, critical response - a review - is not only appreciated, but expected.

Ninja_Tino

What's with the cynical comments about Eurogamer labelling this as a review? Blizzard have made the game openly available for all. Just because it's free-to-play doesn't make it unfinished. From what I've seen it's in a more complete form than Rust or Day Z, which cost 15 and 20, respectively, yet I've seen no one taking issues with the Alpha reviews for those games. Hearthstone a fully playable beast with very real IAPs, so a considered critical response is fair game. In NO way can it be considered a preview.

Ninja_Tino

One of those mechanics that impresses through its simplicity. 'How has this never been done before?!' That response often leads to the best puzzle games.
If they can paint some groovy visuals to go with it, this game could be a cracker!

Games of 2013: Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Ninja_Tino

I would've loved this game if the encounter rate was halved and experience doubled. Dungeons became a chore when you literally had to stop and fight every 15-20 seconds. After 10 hours in the joy of exploration was killed for me. Still, can't deny the game's loveliness and heart, and the battle system is great. I just wish I saw less of it.

Platinum Games president rates its sales as a "C or even a D."

Ninja_Tino

Far too harsh a judgement. Platinum Games deserve an A+ (or is that AAA in game-speak?). Damn shame about the consistently weak sale figures, mind. Hopefully the popularity of Metal Gear meant Rising did alright. If so, I wonder what other IPs befits their idiosyncratic style and are ripe for spin offs? Final Fantasy could definitely work. Kid Icarus? Hope their position is strong enough to continue developing their own original IPs though.
