How many copies did Rock Band 3 sell?

Nick

I own Guitar Hero's 2-5, Rock Band 1 and 2 and Beatles, and even I baulked at the idea of buying RB3 full-price, even though I do really want it. I wonder how many people are waiting for it to come down a bit in price like me. Also, I'd like a keyboard but 70 seems a bit steep. The fact it works as a MIDI peripheral doesn't really matter to me.

Anyone know how many simultaneous players are allowed? Can you have 2 guitars, 1 keyboard, 1 drum and 3 microphones at the same time?

Eurogamer iPhone app launches!

It costs Eurogamer approximately 10p per gigabyte of video served.

So this app can quickly cost us more in bandwidth than it cost you to buy.

@EarlBassett The IGN app has a permanent horizontal ad banner at the bottom of the page. Which explains how they are funding their free app.

@miiguel Thanks - probably overkill for our database needs. We have a couple of great HP DL185 storage server monstrosities providing 12TB storage capacity for our videos and images, though.

@viper_h We built them all by hand using components sourced from all over the place. We had a hell of a time sourcing enough of the excellent low-voltage Intel Xeon Quad-Cores L5410 and L5420s which brought our per-server energy use right down (50W TDP). As I recall, we got the Supermicro chassis via Scan.co.uk which took several weeks to arrive.

This might be rare if you work for Microsoft, but most of the rest of us can easily avoid logging into Xbox.com and Hotmail.com for years at a time!

Search for COG tags at EG Expo

Ginge666 - yep, you send one any time from now and you get put on the list to receive the clues for the rest of the event.

Trundlez: You only get charged for the text you send, not the texts you receive.

And yes, I think there are only 5 or 6 tags - they are very exclusive!

Eurogamer Expo

The event is sold out tomorrow (28th), so you can't pay on the door. If there are still tickets available on the morning of the 29th then you will be able to pay at the door on that day. I'd recommend begging or borrowing (but not stealing) a credit card from someone if you want to be sure of getting in.

Afrika

Nick

Dear Ms. Gibson

I enjoyed your recent publication entitled "Africa: Review" a great deal.

However, my eye was drawn to this comment:

"You start out with the basic Tsetse camera (why is it named after a disease-spreading parasite? It's a bit like calling a new car the Vauxhall MRSA) but you can unlock and purchase much fancier ones - with the word SONY stamped on them of course."

As the resident doctor I have to correct your science: the tsetse fly is in fact the vector for Plasmodium vivax, the parasite (technically a trypanosome) which causes malaria. The tsetse itself is not the parasite.

Anyway, I didn't let this small error spoil my enjoyment of the article.

Sincerely yours

Prof WG B'stard.

Publishers to fine 25,000 game pirates

Nick

The strategy here seems to be quite clever. Firstly, a bunch of people will get letters and a certain percentage of them will pay the fine (either out of guilt or fear of further action), thus covering the costs of the original action. Only a very few cases would actually go to court, I'd imagine, as there would be a huge difficulty proving that the user actually downloaded the file (an IP address surely wouldn't be sufficient). Plus, taking thousands of people to court would be very expensive and presumably place a large strain on the legal system - less of an issue in the US than the UK I'd imaging.

But the largest effect would be that people are dissuaded from downloading PC games in the future and might buy instead. So I think it will have definite anti-piracy effect and for very little cost on behalf of the publishers.
