NPD reveals top 10 selling US retail games for 2014

@Retro-Fit Because that involves the publishers sharing sales, which they refuse to do.

UKIE tried to make a digital chart for a while. Activision among others declined to take part.

@DrStrangelove That's not strictly true. Aside from the fact that you have the option of skipping the level so that you don't have to play it at all, I played No Russian without firing a shot.

So in that sense, it's no different to GTA.

@FortysixterUK Final Fantasy was always a single player game. Then they made XI, which was and remains a great MMO.

The reason I can see that this won't go free to play is that Zenimax, like Square can afford for it not to. And unlike EA,they haven't spent ungodly amounts on a license - they built a game on one of their own.

@Virtual_Entity There are perks in the game but they don't count even though they mean you don't go into the game on an equal footing? I don't think you quite understood the issue I was having.

DilutedDante

Imo, Perks was one of the worst things to happen to the genre. I realise I'm in a minority given the COD sales, but I like the purity of everyone going into a game on an equal footing with only skill and knowledge separating players. I suspect that I'm unlikely to get that from a major shooter again, especially one on console.

Xbox One will function without Kinect plugged in

DilutedDante

@JackB Yes, in terms of views vs sales. Which as your article notes, is a flawed comparison. The thing it should be comparing is the amount of rented discs compared to streams, not purchased discs.

The revenue split by the way is far, far from streaming overtaking discs. Simply put, 2.4 billion sales represent a huge market, and those 2.4 billion are worth way, way more than their stream view counterparts.

If disc died tomorrow, they would lose 9/10 of their revenue, which is the precise reason discs will not be dying any time soon.

@lew15ewad I'm guessing that your 'major uk games retailer' isn't the obvious one then.

To those suggesting there is no reason to include the Kinect in box, you're absolutely wrong. Even if it's not plugged in, the fact it was sold with the box means that developers can be sure that if they make a game that uses the Kinect, every person will have one.

This means that it will not be assured relegation to fluff as it would if it were separate as is the case now. If doesn't mean that it will definitely be put to great use. It may well be the case that it's simply not up to scratch for anything other than fitness and party games.

What it does mean though is that if Kinect has a place in core gaming then this is the only way we will ever get it. I remain unconvinced, but lets see what the future brings.

Right, so Edge are saying this is the best game of this ilk since Bayonetta. And apparently I can buy a skin to play through the whole game as the original Dante at the end of the month. It does also seem to include an option to play as Billy Idol. Not quite sure what that's all about.

But still, Ninja Theory will apparently be getting my money at last

DmC Devil May Cry review

DilutedDante

@frazzl Well he submitted it to PSM3, and it was published on CVG, which says to me that someone at CVG, probably Andy Robinson, made that decision.

Why should you take his reviews seriously? Because he writes what he thinks. Interestingly I've just been reading back on his Twitter, and the line you take so much issue with was a line edited by CVG.

"I wouldn't buy it at a high price" is apparently the line as submitted.
0 1

DilutedDante

@frazzl If it didn't meet CVG's standards, why was it published in the first place? This is why we have editors. It wasn't even intended for publication on CVG, but someone made the decision to move it from another magazine to there, despite it 'not meeting their standards.'

He wasn't the editor who approved the review, and he posted that comment without speaking either to the editor in question or Stanton.

He distances CVG from the review by shouting freelancer, without ever mentioning that the review was not written for them.

Andy Robinson later on actually stands by the review, which if you've been willing to publish something is exactly what you should do. The only other option is to take the blame fully yourselves.

DilutedDante

@frazzl I think far more unprofessional was Rob Crossley deciding to throw him under a bus, and Future for relocating the review from PSM3 to CVG in the first place, without even informing Rich.

The key difference is that Rich lashed out on a personal Twitter account. Rob decided to do what he did in the comments section of the article.

0 0

DilutedDante

@frazzl I have to disagree, I see no disconnect at all. Rich is basically saying that it's good, and it's fun, but wait for it to go into a sale or rent it. Not being worth full price is not the same as being a bad game.

The key sentence is the one before: "But is it worth a more discerning dollar?" Rich's answer is no. If you're looking at 2 different games, pick up another one, because you'll get more out of it.

I'm aware others think it's a bad review. But I disagree with them too.

@rudedudejude They weren't hoping for a 30% boost. They were hoping things would perform as per the forecasts, and they came out worse.

Since they were performing worse than expected, it became obvious they were not going to meet the conditions of their loans. They attempted to renegotiate with the banks but RBS and Lloyds refused to shift. That's what caused the administration.

Why did they think they stood a chance at renegotiating? Well probably because they did just that in 2011.
