Graphics look very PS2, but I kind of like the insane plot. Considering it's a JRPG I'm already sold on it to an extent, but will we get it over here (*cough*fuckNamco*cough*)? :) Reply 0
  • GTA exclusivity won't help X360 beat PS3, says Sony exec

  • tengu 22/06/2006

"This is all getting so verry boring now,I just want the ps3 and Wii to hurry and launch then we wont have to be bored by crapola news like this."

One of the only things I've read here that I can really get behind.

GTA exclusive or not, PS3 has priced itself out of a "victory". It'll perhaps survive, yeah, but not a chance is it going to be number one.

I never leave consoles on standby. I always unplug or switch them off. I question the wisdom in Sony removing the power button on the slimline myself, as I'd much rather have that than a standby button. That little red light annoys me for some reason. Reply 0

"Sony could have kept their mouths shut and it would have still dreamcasted the dreamcast."

Sega were already in the shit when the Dreamcast came out though. Sony were only a part of the console's failure, EA and Sega were more responsible for it happening though, weren't they?

Eh, agree on the Dreamcast version of SC being the best yet(And best 3D fighter ever imo), and while it would be nice if SCIV could be a good game, let alone better than the first, Namco do seem to have lost it a bit in recent years. Wait and see time.

Well, it's kind of a given that the PS2 isn't as powerful as the Xbox, what with the PS2 being the far older machine. Reply 0

Don't forget to factor in HDDs here as well. 60gb on PS3, 20gb on 360. I know bigger 360 drives are on the way, but given that the 20gb drive costs 70 quid, how much are they likely to be?

I'd usually be supportive of EG review scores(Despite one or two "disagreements" in the past) when I think they're fair enough, but this case seems like a bit of a screw up really, doesn't it? Glad I normally hate footie games, else I may have ended up buying this.

  • Tekken 5

  • tengu 14/06/2006

Can't say as I really agree with some of your points in the review Kami. Yes, Tekken 5 is definitely a 'step back' for the series, but considering how much of a fuck up the supposed 'step forward' of Tekken 4 was, this isn't entirely a bad thing.

The stages are a bit lifeless, but that's always been a stable of Tekken, but at least now they have a bit of detail and colour to them. The characters are mostly okay, with old faves like Heihachi, Paul, Law and King still feeling familiar and comfortable to use, and noobs like Asuka and Raven being decent enough additions to the roster, if fairly unspectacular, the fights are enjoyable enough, if still not quite as 'up there' as Tekken 3.

Biggest thing though is Jinpachi. Sure he has a LOT of cheap ass moves that can piss you off, but I honestly never had any real trouble with him. He was annoying with a couple of the shittier characters, but when I was using guys like Law, Kazuya and Ganryu, I worked over him first try in seconds. He is fairly cheaply put together, yes, but there are final bosses who I'd class as cheaper(eg. DOA4's final boss). I may have just got lucky with him though, who knows.

What I don't get is your dismissal of the story mode though. It was a great laugh. Almost no seriousness to it at all and some really great endings in there(Especially Panda, Kuma, Heihachi and Xiaoyu's imo), it was pretty nice I think. Oh, and Devil Within... bit crappy, yeah, but an amusing diversion for an hour or two if nothing else.

I'd personally score the game 7/10 myself, as the multiplayer isn't really very engaging or satisfying, especially considering in Tekken 2 I can remember having hours long blasts on team battle with a few mates, and on Tekken 5 we could barely muster a half hour on it.

The game is a step in the right direction after Tekken 4, but it's a pretty minor step at that. You're right about it not touching the brilliance of Soul Calibur though.

I thought Jinpachi was a walkover myself. He was annoying with a couple of the shitter characters, but nothing too bad.

Oh, I did buy SCIII in the end as it happens, and I seemed to enjoy it a lot more than Kami did :)

Still, once again it was nowhere close to the perfection of the first Soul Calibur :(

"So, what really matters is software sales, that's were the big three earn the money, and where the PSP is soundly defeated."

Perhaps no PSP games in the American charts for May because it had no major releases, and just about every other console did. Only two DS games in the US top 30 for May, and both very big name titles. One of those is(Probably) the biggest DS title yet released, the other(Brain Training) is a massively hyped 'budget' title. Nothing odd there. As said, the phenomenal success of the DS doesn't mean the PSP is a failure by any means.

The PSP's great as far as I'm concerned. I've never had any major control issues(Apart from the lack of stick usage in Darkstalkers), the battery lasts plenty long enough for me on one charge, I've played plenty of good games on it, so clearly it's doing something right. I'm perfectly happy with it.

Been waiting for the PSP version of Tomb Raider Legend before getting the game, and it sounds decent, so I guess it's a buy. Good-oh.

  • FF to look like Advent Children?

  • tengu 08/06/2006

"If I were Squenix I'd be concentrating more on actually putting a story that didn't look like it was written by an angst-ridden 15 year old emo twerp before anything else; even fixing the terminally boring combat dynamic."

The FF games have nearly always been a cut above other JRPGs(Especially in terms of combat systems), so I don't know where you're getting that bollocks from. Where they lead other JRPGs usually follow. The stories are no better or worse than those you'll find in any other genre of game either, so I don't get why FF is singled out for the way it's written.

"I'll hold out a little hope for Squenix though, considering how good their former employee's efforts with Lost Odyssey are looking right now. I do so hope we can see a rejuvenation of the Oriental RPG genre."

This'll be the same Lost Odyessy that looks and sounds exactly like those 'terminally boring angst ridden twerp' athons you were just slating? What's different here? Because I'm not seeing anything apart from which console it's on.

"If a year from now I own a PS3 and am still thinking about backwards compatibility, then I'm going to be concerned about the obvious lack of PS3 titles taking up my time."

Or perhaps there's just some decent PS2 games still coming out you'll be wanting to play? BC isn't really an issue with the Xbox 1 obviously because it's pretty much a dead format.

BC on the PS3 will be a big thing for as long as there are new games coming out for the PS2 that people want to play.
