  • 3DS sales "weaker than expected" despite Japan success

  • emmeteeny 24/10/2012

@Muddtallica I don't mean it to be harsh; I'm a big Nintendo fan and I've tried to get behind the 3DS a lot. However, all the games I really wanted to play at the start of the year - the three I mentioned plus Layton v Phoenix Wright, Monster Hunter 4 - will have to wait until next year. JRPGs and the MGS franchise have never really appealed to me, although I did have some enjoyment with RE Revelations. It has still largely been a year to forget if you ask me. It seems like the biggest bet for Nintendo is NSMB2 which is one of the laziest and most uninspired Mario platformers I've ever played. Reply +4

Well what do they expect? Aside from Kid Icarus and NSMB2, has there been any AAA first-party releases this year for the handheld? For a while there it looked like we might get Luigi's Mansion 2, Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem for Q4 but they've all retreated to 2013. I'm not particularly excited for a Professor Layton game that was released 18 months ago in Japan to fill that gap. Reply +22
  • Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask and Paper Mario: Sticker Star dated

Pretty light Christmas line-up for the 3DS. Last year we had a new 3D Mario and a Mario Kart and this year we get Paper Mario and an 18-month old Layton release. Pity Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing were delayed too. Reply +1
  • Nintendo: Western 3DS momentum "currently weak"

  • emmeteeny 04/07/2012

Not surprised. Aside from Kid Icarus (not exactly a known quantity to many casual gamers), there has been no other first-party AAA title in the first six months of the year. New Super Mario Bros 2 will sell well next month, but what after that? Are Luigi's Mansion and a new Layton their big hope for the 3DS this Christmas?

There have been too many delays to games people have wanted to play for a long time (Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem to 2013) and there's not enough on the horizon - am I right in thinking that there were no new games unveiled at E3 or their Nintendo Direct conference last month?

I'm actually quite tempted to upgrade to a 3DS XL but considering that I'll probably only buy two games for the console for the rest of the year, it's not really worth it.

  • Nintendo hits back at Wii U power concern

  • emmeteeny 14/06/2012

I like Reggie but I am already fed up with the current console generation and its experiences so the idea of buying a console and for the next five years, playing games with the same graphics and power as Xbox 360 and PS3 is not appealing.

At least when the Wii launched, the previous PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation had not actually been that long but due to the ongoing economic climate we've had a console generation lengthened by necessity and for that reason I can't get excited - touch-screen gimmicks aside - for more of the same.

That the Wii U can only muster graphics "at least as good" as the Xbox 360 is just depressing - I would've at least had my head turned if it could offer power thus far unseen in the home console arena. I'm not sure Nintendo realises just how touch it will be to win back the expanded audience fans who have been lost to smartphones and tablets.

  • Mass Effect 3 launch trailer strikes back

  • emmeteeny 20/02/2012

Nothing beats the Mass Effect 2 launch trailer (my favourite ever, actually) but this was pretty effective. No spoilers @WillWongler, it's a CGI-heavy clip akin to that Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer a few months back. Reply +5

Mach Rider's not a "completely new franchise for Nintendo", it was released in 1985 for the NES and the rider was a Smash Bros Brawl trophy. Reply +3

I actually had enormous fun playing the tag mode at a recent Ubisoft event. Didn't get to play the single player and wasn't too fussed about the regular multiplayer racing mode but I can't recommend the tag mode enough Reply +3
  • Yakuza: Dead Souls Review

  • emmeteeny 12/07/2011

This should be downloadable content, not a full retail release. Considering the fact that (according to what I've read) the developers didn't even bother to update the movie posters in Kamurocho's cinema, not to mention Aikayama's outfit even, this is just the same-old, same-old, with a zombie-reskin and apparently rubbish new controls. Disappointing stuff, especially since I invested hours into Yakuza 4, mostly with side quests that I'd wager are identical in the new game Reply -5

Nobody in the pod has heard of Hybrid Heaven?!!

It was a much anticipated game in the early N64 days, particularly in the pages of N64 Magazine. MGS was a Sony exclusive for Konami and so the game's (a N64 exclusive from Konami) mature look made it really stand out for players that didn't want cutesy games. The early screenshots had excellent visuals too. In the end it suffered plenty of delays and was barely noticed when it shuffled into stores. I remember N64 Magazine were so taken by its storyline that they gave away every single twist in a sidebar for their review too.

I sound very nerdy here but I thought more people had heard of it?

  • emmeteeny 02/03/2011

Bah, I was hoping for a 9. As excited for the 3DS as I am, the two games I'm going to buy (SFIV and Pilotwings) are fairly niche - would I have bought them on my home consoles or if they were released alongside Zelda & Kid Icarus? Nope Reply -8

I'm a little confused too. I set up my GI.biz account and was fully expecting the opportunity to fill out an application form or upload a C.V once I clicked 'apply', but none appeared. Also I can't re-send an application now. Mugwum, you extremely attractive and charming human, can you tell me if I've done something wrong in this instance, or is there another 'round' in which you get to include more details? Reply 0
