Was at MCM Expo yesterday with my son. We played a platformer on the U where a couple of Tim Burtonesque styled kids were shinning up ropes and walled castles etc. The extra screen was being employed as a selection tool for 3 other characters who were going through their 'we're waiting' animations in the down time. It just seemed such a regression in game play, and the nod to the extra controller was lazy at best. Kind of what I expected from the Wii U tbh.
And one of the Nintendo guys on hand told me enthusiastically about its HD graphics capability over the old Wii. He was so surreally earnest that I had to remind myself that I'd been experiencing that on PS3 since March 2007. Reply-3
PlayStation and PC gamer here, and a huge Monster Hunter fan. Played MH on PS2 and all the PSP versions, for hundreds of hours each...loved them. But the sad truth is I'll probably never get to play a new Monster Hunter game ever again, as I refuse to buy new hardware to play games that will run just fine on the stuff I already have, with Capcom's business decisions not making any sense these days, so it seems. Capcom should make every game they produce from now on exclusive to Nintendo consoles, y'know, in order to make the most money, and sell the most units. Reply+1
I wonder if the emphasis is on making a full blown version for PS4 but then also providing a stripped down version for PS3? It would be a good move imho. Publishing and distribution costs aside, the development costs wouldn't be as horrendous, and there may very well be a 'poster child' game, by way of straight comparison, for the improvements to be found on PS4. Those who were never going to make the leap to next gen' would be kept happy too. Reply+4
This is still about £150 more expensive than just releasing Monster Hunter on PS3. Sort it out Capcom! Never going to buy a Wii or Wii U for your games, sorry. Reply-7
Played half an hour of 'Bug Hunt' last night. Quite good fun, and I mean that oddly enough. The maps are cool (still red door/ green door driven, but hey) but the Blops 2 Zombie Mode has clearly influenced the flow of the action, with purchasing of unlocks/ objectives etc....and it works just as well with Aliens as the enemy. Talking of which, Aliens now actually leap about the map, stick to walls, use other surfaces, and do loads more damage in melee. Certainly now as dangerous as the Aliens in the AvsP 2010 Survivor mode. The graphics (apart from the OTT film grain) are now alot better too. I can see myself returning to A:CM again, but only for this mode. Alas too little too late though, after the deserved critical mauling the vanilla game got. Reply0
@jabberwocky Sorry jabberwocky, but online is where this game lets itself down the most. The single player is bad, but at least it's mildly focused. Online is a thematic mess, and you know that the only reason the Aliens play in 3rd person and can't climb walls properly a la AvsP is because noone was clever enough/ had enough time to make it happen. At least all 3 character builds are okay in AvsP 2010. Noone in their right minds would want to play as an Alien in the mess that is A:CM. That's why they force it on you, one game in two. Reply0
None of those flaws are what make this game so disappointing.
A few weeks ago, as a comparison, I played the level in AvsP 2010 where you have to hold off Aliens/ Praetorians with the help of a sentry gun on a bridge, in front of the Predator temple.
It was fecking terrifying!
Unless the patches can bring a similar level of terror/ fear/ suspense to A:CM's single player mode, then it is utterly useless, imho. Its multiplayer, with its horrible clunky 3rd person Alien mode, and forced alternating teams (I don't want to play as an Alien, EVER...thanks for asking) is beyond redemption. Reply+2
That's why they should work, as they're clearly an incentive. As long as they're clear that the demo is time locked (plainly, on the cover of the game) then I guess it's not as weird and as cynical as this seems. I mean, what next, trailers on a bluray that you can't watch until the movie companies allow....and no one even makes a big thing about trailers. This is an incentive or the demo would be unannounced and simply there for people to chance upon in the main game's menu. Reply0
"Includes exclusive demo of The Last of Us (that you can't play for ages!)"
doesn't have quite the same ring to it. Bit of a weird one tbh, as usually if you're given something extra as an incentive you can enjoy it as soon as you get it. Reply+2
So they want it to crack the west and yet theyre banking on the unknown quantity that is Wii U + 3ds in order to do this? How about the tried and tested Xbox Live route, or PSN on the game's home brand of console? If this iteration of Monster Hunter fails to catch on in the West then Capcom only have their own idiocy to blame. Reply+1
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite was the pinnacle of PSP gaming IMHO. Until the Vita gets its own bespoke version I won't be getting one. Guaranteed hours of quality 'big console' gaming. Reply+2
