So, let me get this straight.

If a game gets funded on kick starter, it still has to go through all the steam green light business no? But as soon as you get a publisher on board (*and a shitty one at that) it automatically bypasses this, or have I missed something here?

If the latter is the case then what a shitty system in place!

  • Capn_Franky 05/05/2013

I first played this at a LAN party, whilst everyone was off screaming and playing Counter-Strike I was silent and cowering in fear as I was en route to an ambush on the colonel.

I instantly bought it as I got home and still play it whenever I can, the mission editor is utterly fantastic and the fear as your team drops one by one has never been achieved by any other game than X-com. The second your team shouts out "Sniper. 800 yards. 10 o'clock" followed by a whisking bullet is utterly terrifying.

Code masters ruined the franchise and ran its name through the mud when they attempted to turn it into COD, dragon rising is a nice nod to the earlier version but is no where near as well done.

It was also one of the first games I've played that didn't force me to fire my weapon even once, the second you go into the first proper mission after landing by Blackhawks and under orders from the ai the atmosphere completely changes from this is awesome I'm going to f*ck sh*t up, to oh damn, this just got real.

I finished that mission without even seeing an enemy, firing a bullet or being fired upon (and no I wasn't hiding in a bush), the later missions had me patrolling a nearby forest and only encountering 3 enemies in a 40+ min mission, not to mention the mission where you have to navigate by the stars after being shot down and being all alone... My God I miss this game!!!!!!

  • Suda51 blames publisher problems for low game sales

  • Capn_Franky 03/05/2013

Publishers are always bad for game development, thankfully we have kickstarter to put fear into them now and to allow devs more freedom, but once a grape that breaths fire is popular with a focus group, you have to put it in the game potentially damaging sales.

I don't however think a publisher had anything to do with most of the above games lack of sales, especially brutal legend, great adventure game but the awful tower defence gameplay ruined it for me.

@adetheterriblePG Not will look as in Pre rendered, will look as in the final product, and as I said if that's not possible for the company to do then release dev diaries.

I've not played bioshock so that video doesn't mean anything to me but it's a bad example, Aliens didn't, as people said, have any proper footage other than the video in question which used actuall gameplay areas that look a million times worse in game.

Bioshock had a lot of videos before the game came out as they had confidence with their product, Metro Last light is another game to watch out for as the only advertisement I have see for this game is a live action trailer.

Dead Island also hid behind a great trailer that showed nothing for what the game had to show for it (other than zombies) and that game was also a buggy mess.

No matter how good or bad the game is, no dev should be allowed to hide behind smoke and mirrors, regardless of how much the industry is 'used to it'.

By all means use live actions and obvious 'fake' trailers like dead island, but show proper footage rather than using bait and switch.

  • Capn_Franky 01/05/2013

@adetheterriblePG Rubbish, if your game isn't good enough that Pre rendered or completely new sections of game have to be created just to gain interest, chances are, the game is shit.

Maybe only release videos of how the game will look? Minecraft released videos of each stage of development as does almost all alpha funded games, they do perfectly fine.

"But they don't know how the game will look until its done!" So have faith in a product and release dev diaries, that evokes far more hype than anything such as the recently release bf4 'trailer' will.

Why is everyone defending them by saying "Everyone does it!"? That doesn't make it right, it's only AAA wankers that pull this shit off because they somehow feel the need to sell it to every system or the game is a failure, regardless of content quality and reviews.

Anyone remember the time burger king got done over the advert for the whopper or XL burger, as the advert showed the guy holding a fairly decent sized burger when in reality it was the same burger, just smaller? Same thing.

If you're on SEGA/Gearboxes side then I'm sorry but you're an idiot, the industry needs to change and it's only going to do so if we start making examples of companies for bullshit like this.

Gearbox are a shit company and sega aren't too far behind so when either release a game you have to think twice before doing so, especially using the logic given by the first half of comments as apparently 'everyone' that's is a gamer reads reviews....

  • Despite Kickstarter shortfall, Defense Grid 2 development now under way

  • Capn_Franky 28/04/2013

@RedSparrows I know all costs involved within game development but each case is different.

The game isn't a million pounds worth of game, it's tower defence, I know very basic GML script and can create a tower defense game within mere hours.

Yes gml is different to unreal or the engine DG uses but at the end of the day all it requires in an enemy to follow a path avoiding solid objects whilst towers shoot them when they get so close... It's not difficult, the same goes for the graphics, very basic.

So where else is the money going that's costing so much other than wages? To they not own maya? Unreal?

Kickstarter just allows for this 'greed' look at the latest bs that has happened involving the 9 year old who wanted $800 for an rpg camp but earned $20,000. Her mums a millionaire and she has shoes twice the price...

@internisus @internisus whilst I understand and agree with everything you say and have said, it simply doesn't cost a million to develop a simple tower defense game.

£250,000 and I'm still dubious but that depends on the size of the team, in my eyes the goal was for the sequel, the 'stretch goal' was just to achieve more money.

Because if it costs £250,000 to create an add on to a tower defence game when the ai, assets and engine are all being reused then I'm getting a job at hidden path as they must pay through the roof.

I'm not shunning kickstarter at all as its a great way for security when creating a game but at least be honest with the funds, and explain why it costs so much, unless HP did and no one has mentioned it....

The game didn't sell because it was complete turd, more so if you pay the RRP on the product, it felt like a budget title with reused levels and enemies over and over again.

When your team is split about the game you know you're onto something mediocre, I doubt anyone during development of bioshock, Grid, zombies ate my neighbours ever doubted the title they were working on.

You may not be able to put gameplay on the back of a box but you can certainly put it on YouTube which is where I and I'm sure others make a vast majority of the purchase decisions on these gameplay videos.

I'm almost fairly certain no one will remember this game as the years pass and no one is missing it now either.

To out it bluntly the guy just doesn't know what he is doing in regards to making games great, take this article for instance as he creates another miserable game, then simply "doesn't understand why people aren't playing it":

Did they put blackbeards fuses on his hat rather than in his beard? Is it even Blackbeard? I presume as it mentioned meeting historic figures and pictures a man with a ... Black beard, but that's just wrong!

A beardless, hatless pirate, instead wearing a hood? No ta. Why couldn't they have just moved away from the assists creed for once? Does anyone even care or can logically follow the story anymore without thinking Ubisoft are just loosing the plot? It reminds me of the story for lost, random bollocks happens and when revealed we are supposed to feel revelations, instead we just call it for what it is, bull.

Also, (and I nit pick now) Pirates historically flew red flags, the black flag was used to portray to other ships "give me your stuff and I'll spare you", a red flag and you were all going to die, so destroying a ship whilst flying a black flag wasn't common. I'd think otherwise watching that video.

  • "Why should we ask how long a game is?"

  • Capn_Franky 13/03/2013

@bad09 "It's true some games have filler, his example of MP3 is spot on IMO I was willing that game to end well before I got to the actual end but on the flip side you have something like Crysis 3 that can clocked in an evening leaving just a grinding multiplayer as most of the "content" of the game"

What, come on dude? Where in Max Payne is the filler? It's a rich story driven game which is the only reason he used it as an example.

Every level in the game was required as was the cutscenes, the only reasons ive found people to hate on the game is that you can't skip the cutscenes or they hate how Max has become, but how would you act if you were addicted to alcohol and pills along with loosing everyone you've ever loved?

Since Max Payne 3 he has become one of my top 5 game characters as he feels real and the narrative really helped me to feel the characters emotions, hiding in a bush in a third game released in half the time of Max Paynes second to third release where the story is mute with cut and paste mechanics is a bad comparison.

Notice though how he chose Max Payne as an example and not GTA? Within the first 10 minutes of gta you've done everything but we still play and love the game 20+ hours in.

As many have said above, we pay in excess of £30 for games, so for a £30 experience to be worth it you need a lot of content to satisfy us, be it through lengthening the game in artificial ways such as go there come back quests (done well of course), or with some great lengthy MP/Gameplay that keeps us coming back.

Paying £30 for a 4 hour game is daylight robbery and prices reflect this as 4 hour games are typically budget releases or arcade games that sell from £5 - £20.

If someone made a film and it cost me and my girlfriend £20 to see (which it near enough does) that lasted what, 30 minutes, even if it was the best story I've ever seen I would leave feeling robbed.

We pay primarily based on quality but always keep value for money at the back of our mind, the same applies to everything from buying a car to going out for a meal.

good luck to the man if he feels he can make a profit and has the story to justify a high price tag on a short game, but I have a slight feeling it will be reduced in no time.

@Zyklonbzombie So when it happens for the millionth time and apple have to spend more time fixing other people's stupid mistakes they shouldn't bat an eye lid?

Apple should have made an example out of them, all this has done is put faith in the fact that Apple will give refunds if you're too stupid to work a device you've given to a child.

Parents bitch and moan locking children out of the Internet, limiting gaming time but seem to forget the iPad does all the above and more, then are shocked to find its gone tits up.

"Dad can I play with your gun?"
"It wasn't loaded when I handed it to him and the saftey was on"

That's okay, Colt will right your wrongs, be more careful next time.

If we live in a world where no matter what a company does to stop things like this happening other than forcing you to pass a test on how to make the device child proof before you can use it, then have to refund someone because they are too simple to know how to do this then to quote the popular meme:

"I don't want to live on this planet anymore".

Regardless of the purchased item being a simple piece of code, a game or a boat from eBay a legitimate exchange took place and powers were in play to protect the buyer from this exact scenario, no one to blame but themselves and they should be ashamed of themselves.

I remember being at college and if you left your PC on and someone emailed the teacher saying you loved them or insert 'funny' email, it was the persons account that would get punished for the act, regardless if they had the shits and had to leave in a hurry.

The carrot leaves it to be done again, the stick and that was the last time it happens. Tl;dr

On another note I'm really enjoying Trade Nations, this has IAP which speeds up the game and gives exclusive contents via the currency of 'magic beans', does anyone have a child I can borrow whilst I disable IAP so I can get my town looking lovely, then contact a newspaper about how innocent I and the child were, whilst getting my pennies returned?

Apple should have stuck the middle finger up and told them to deal with it, no one to blame but themselves, where does the fine line end with kids + money = refund? As my Rum and cigar wish list is piling up. Now I may just have a reason to spawn a child.

Also I don't get the whole privateer/pirate selling point, they are the same thing, only with the former given a letter of marque to legally attack the enemies of the king.

The only use I can see from the games standpoint of stating this is for the moment in the plot when your buddy king finds out about your piracy day and attempts to kill you, sending an armada of ships. However the friends you earned during your piracy mischief come to your aid and save the day.
