I think carry one is fine if you're with a group, as you can always pool resources.

However, the fundamental rule of being able to get yourself home outside of a complete mechanical disaster still applies.

For this monster miles thing I'm going to have to resist the urge to take more than I need, but it does mean I can put little things in like a spare derailleur hanger. The chances of breaking one are low, but they weigh next to nothing.

Based on other things I've read about it and it's ubiquitous nature on the US cross country scene, I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.

Just ordered a new headset to go with my shiny new fork. Odds on that I've bought the wrong one or something in general isn't going to work out with it. I hate messing around with forks and headsets.

Getting the crown race on is the only really tricky bit with drop in headsets. After you get the right size one obvs.

I love my new bike, I know it's only a cheapo from Halfords but I love it, when riding it it turns nearly everyone's head because it looks so good, it's my first road bike (racer back in my day) for nearly 20 years and can't believe the difference and speed in the ride, I got it last friday but grew my confidence on it on sunday, I've ridden it every day since, even use it for my commute to work, will upgrade my tyres to gatorskins when the time comes.

When I got it I got a computer for it as well and am averaging 20 mph on my local run which is roughly 10 miles, I'm quite chuffed with that.

I've used Mr Sheen on it every day to keep it spotless, I'm sure the novelty of that will soon wear off.

    You better watch out.
    You better beware.

Bought a mid-priced hybrid a couple of weeks ago to try and work on the old beer belly.

Used to cycle a lot when i was younger but being thirty is kicking the fuck out of me. I briskly walk nearly 10km most days without too much bother but fuck me cycling is hard.

I sweat more than i thought humanly possible after doing maybe a couple of kms with some gradual slopes. Maybe i'm just being retarded with the gears or something.
Keep at it man. I'm in the same boat but I have been commuting on my bike since March. I found the best motivation was an app called Strava. Stick that on your smart phone and chart your rides. It will tell you how much you have done and when you are getting faster.

Bikes are the best. Just keep at it, you'll soon build the required muscle up.

Don't let the novelty wear off pube, the more you clean it the less it's needs a deep clean which is a fuck of a job.

Spent 7 hours over the weekend stripping by back to nothing, degreasing, cleaning every part and putting the old groupset on a new frame, upgrading the group on my now spotless Wilier. New cables and bar tape went on tonight, looking forward to a spank in the morning.

Spent two hours getting the rust off my chain / cassette yesterday. Stupidly I cleaned it and then left it in my garage overnight without drying or lubing it. =/

You can usually ride off a night's rust. On the second day of my c2c it pissed it down all day (apart from the few bits where we rode to above the low cloud) and I didn't have any oil with me, so it just sat overnight under and awning. Next morning the chain and casette were bright orange, but a few miles later and there were only a few rusty specks left anywhere.

As for getting into cycling, I thought my legs were in reasonable nick from all the running I used to do when I first got my bike, but going up the slope from my house used to utterly wring me out. Nowadays it's just a slight pump to get over the bump at the bottom and then I barely need to pedal to get to the top at a decent lick.

Probably, but there was no way I was going to put lube on top of that mess.

That's a point. Mind you, didn't have the option while I was away from home, so I just had to ride the last 90 miles dry. Luckily the cassette and chain needed replacing anyway.

    Dominant performance.

Shame for Wiggins, but Martin was untouchable.

Martin's individual TT time would have placed him 6th in the Team TT. Absolute monster.

They advertise a London one quite often but I've never actually seen it action. I think it's a sort of get-out-on-your-bike day but not quite a sportive.

I once got forced off the trail by a Sky Ride coming through.

@Mal, nice one on the C2C, which did you do?

It's an easy family ride as I'm taking the eldest with me, I only joined to make new friends and possibly meet new people to ride with competitively, loving my new bike, have nearly all the gear just need the clipless pedals, I've got the shoes they're slippy as fuck on my laminate flooring lol.

Redid the bearings in both of my wheels tonight. Goddamn I hate that job.

No, that's too tight, it's grinding. No, that's too loose, it's moving. That's perfect, I'll just tighten it up fully... and now it's grinding.

    Grrr.
