That's the best part of long rides... eating what the fuck you want afterward. ;)
Humm...not sure I agree with that and tbh, probably why I see a lot of overweight riders. I do think there is still a lot of confusion as to how many calories you do burn on the bike and people eat too much, both before, during and after.

Oh a random note for pistol... I looked up the Marmotte course on gpsies.

    WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!?!
    ;)

It's funny because 109 miles in itself is no issue, but the Marmotte is probably around 75% climbing. I'm going to do it one more time and try for gold and then start looking at Italy if family life allows. It's a lot of sacrifice if you want to ride it well but an icredible experience. Hardest Sportive in Europe.

Well, I know pretty much exactly what I burn (especially now I have my VO2 max figures again) and after a 6 hour ride I also know that there's no way I could eat enough even if I wanted to. I just can't eat that much food, it's not going to happen.

I just wish I was better at eating gels etc when I'm actually out. I still can't get into the habit.

Going back to Marmotte, how long is it supposed to take anyway? You mention gold, is that a specific time?

I don't think it's even about calories, because you're right. On a 6 hour ride your body would really struggle to absorb what you're burning. It's the type of food I see people eat, particularly on Sportives.

A lot of the Sportives provide very fatty foods at the feed stops and whilst it's important to keep your salt intake high, there really is no excuse for wolfing down bundles of crisps and 4 or 5 flapjacks etc. By all means bring on the right amount of carbs per our but try and limit the fat.

Your body can only really absorb around 60g of carbs per hour tops, so where does the rest go??

Depends on your age group but I'm going for 9 hours or under. Took me 10 hours last year. I've done the 128 mile wales dragon in under 8 hours and other 100 mile hilly sportives in around 5.20/5.30 etc.

Ah, well I've never done sportives so I can't really speak for what people are munching on those. I tend to have pasta beforehand and a mix of protein, carbs and fat afterward. During I usually just eat shotblocks when I remember to.

Also, 9 hours sounds like an epic time for that route. I'd be lucky to do half in that time. :D

The only reason I tend to use sports bars and gels on events is so I know exactly how many carbs I'm taking on per hour. I'll break a bar into 2 peices and it every 30 minutes and a gel at the end of the hour. Some people take gels at the end of the event only as solids will take too long to get into the system.

In training I'll eat all sorts, fig rolls, home-made flaphacks, Waitrose flapjack bites (10g carb each) banana. It's not so important if I'm under or over but on Sportives I want to get it right.

Don't use energy drinks anymore and just use water and hydration tablet, otherwise I'm well over-doing the carb per hour intake.

You do get riders coming in 14-15 hours and it's getting dark. The last part is Alp Duez which is a 13km climb.

I haven't no, but know the event and people who have done it. My whole year is pretty much based around the Wales Dragon in June and Marmotte in early july. My first 100 mile Sportive is in May, then after the Marmotte I do my last of the year in Sept. Then start winter training for the following year in dec. With family commitments I would struggle to do anymore.

Bradley got knocked off his bike by a man with a van?
I was still half hoping he might come to the 6-day event in the Ghent velodrome next week. Hope if he was going to (slim chance though) that didn't put a stop to that.

Broken ribs and possibly damaged hands from the reports. I'd say he's out for the Ghent 6 dayer.

Was a Vauxhall Astra. I do believe they come in panel van style though so there could be some confusion over that.
