    @Trowel I agree wholeheartedly.

I think it doesn't help that in first year of uni, before I'd seen it, everyone quoted it as if it was Spinal Tap or something. When I actually sat down and watched it I was very disappointed. It's funny in parts, but not overly so.

I hated Anchorman the first time I saw it, didn't get it at all, hated it all the more for everyone else loving it. Then I watched it again a year or so later and loved it.

    True story.

I lurk. If I've spoken to you, I'm either impassioned, or drunk.

Reading this thread I am constantly puzzled how some people are able to watch films that are no longer at the cinema and have not been released on DVD/Blu-ray yet. Hmmmm....

    Safety Not Guaranteed
Been wanting to watch this since it was on at my local indie cinema but couldn't get. Finally watched it on US Netflix. Enjoyed it, Plaza was good as the pretty but cynical lady. Not sure about the ending but worth a watch for the most of the film.

    Kick Ass 2 - 65/100

No idea how this made it through as a 15, it's really violent. Not sure why it was made at all, apart from the profit, obviously. Quite depressing, teeters on examining the reality of the matter and then skips off for some more silliness while telling people off for swearing.

However, it was the first film that I've seen in the cinema with my partner since we became parents, and we had supermegacomfy seats in a great position, so I'm not complaining as it wasn't utterly dreadful. And Hit Girl will always rock.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

    Yeah, Anchorman is hugely overrated.

Personally I love Anchorman to death. It's one of my favourite films and yes I used to quote it to death at uni. But I still find it hilarious to watch now. So no, it's not overrated in the slightest in my opinion.

Because every country in the world has the exact same release schedules for cinema, dvd, blu ray, tv and digital right?

Yeah, but mainly piracy. It's hardly a conundrum.

Speaking of piracy, I watched The East the other day. Thought it was okay(ish). Stuffed to the hilt with cliches, though.

I haven't reviewed it here but, as an example, I watched Pacific Rim in Skövde last Wednesday. It must be long gone from UK cinemas now.

See also Monty Python and Blackadder.

Except Life of Brian is great no matter how many people quote it.

Last Vegas. (Test Audience - will likely be edited, thankfully!)

Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Kevin Kline. Weak story but some genuinely amusing scenes. Predictable and terribly hokey conclusion. Good to see with parents and those who like their comedy mild.

    Harmless 6.5/10.

    Drive - 10/10

... wonky eyes asides, it is just so utterly astounding. The stylistic neon 80's vibe along with that soundtrack makes this incredibly watchable. Think that was the sixth time I have seen this film.

A crying shame that Only God Forgives is all style, very little substance.

    Commando - 1985

    Underrated. It's a brilliant 80s action movies.
Especially the first half is very well paced.
The island action at the end is actually the most boring part of the movie but still surprised by it all in all.

    7/10 even without Arnie nostalgia.

    Red Heat - 1988

Some good bits in it but only solid stuff at the end.

    6.5/10

Talking of Piracy, I saw Gravity earlier today. It's brilliant. I won't give a score until it's officially released though, as I think that's a decent compromise to make, given the circumstance.

Sums it up nicely for me, although km's description "too much Tony Stark and not enough Iron Man" is probably better, although I think they've run out of ideas for IM.

    American Mary - 8/10

One of the most interesting and different horror films I've seen for a long time.

The plot focuses on a student surgeon, who through various circumstances ends up in the underground world of body modification.

The main performance Katharine Isabelle as Mary keeps the film grounded in reality as things get more and more freakish as the film develops. It could have easily gone the other way and played hammy or for laughs. The film does contain a pitch black sense of humour which is genuinely funny with a few belly laughs thrown in there.

The film isn't overly gory, especially considering the subject matter. There are a few scenes that made me wince though but it's not torture porn.

The acting from everyone concerned is superb. It's full of decent if not memorable characters, the script is sharp and witty and it's a film that doesn't have to resort to cheap shock tactics to try and scare you. In fact, even though it's classed as horror, I don't think it is really. It just tells a story which needs to have some graphic scenes in there.

Well worth seeking out. It's on Netflix US as well.

Edit: I've just had a slight rethink. It IS horror. Just a bit different is all.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

Just watched this myself too and absolutely loved it! Exceeded all of my expectations.

I especially liked the start, with just the two characters.

Tom Cruise DIDN'T annoy me either, it's a miracle.
