I felt I had to keep explaining THG to my wife, I'm not sure it did do such a great job of portraying the book.
it did gloss over a fair bit of plot...i think what i meant was that what i saw on screen was a pretty true reflection of how i'd visualised it from reading the book....with the exception of the cornucopia....

we've all read it in this house, though, so knew what was going on...;)

I enjoyed the book a lot more. The film jumps all over the place missing large chunks. Loses any impact and you just don't care about anything. Bit of a mess. Don't think the sequels will fair better.

    Hodejegerne (Headhunters)
Fror some weird reason I thought there would be robots in this film. There aren't. I'm not sure if it would have benefitted form robots... But seeing a film where you expect robots to turn up anloy for the to never turn up puts a weird spin on any film.

Even weirder is that if I had to sum it up in one word I'd say "bizarre" or maybe "somewhatsurreal" and that is for a film that I thought would have surprise robots and then didn't.

    Well worth watchin

And once again There are NO robots in this film.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

He man and the Master of the universe....

    Nothing like i remember it.

Interesting facts. Well not that interesting. Tom Paris from Star Trek Voyager is in it. So is courtney Cox. Mr Strickand from back to the future is in it.

and err... basically trying to be star wars in LA. or wherever.

Still sat through the whole thing even though it is abysml.

8/10 if you are a 6 year old.

    Safety Not Guaranteed

Two interns and a journalist check out a newspaper ad written by someone seeking a time travel partner ('Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before.'). Funny and sad in turns, almost Napoleon Dynamite-y in places. Shame it was so short, I think it could've kicked up a gear and really tried something different.

    8/10
I watched this a few nights a go and agree with the 8/10. I did think it was the perfect length though as it stopped them from explaining away too much and ruining the fun.

I couldn't agree more. I saw this a while back at Sundance London and I really enjoyed it. The Q&A with the director was very interesting. The film did originally have a completely different ending.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

@Kostabi That's also true, making it longer could've made it less charming - if I want hardcore time travel there's always Primer :)

    In the Mouth of Madness

One of Carpenter's greatest achievements. Made in the mid 90's but feels very much like an 80's classic. Sam Neill's performance is spot on, as are the very effective visual effects.

    7.5/10

"You see it too? For me, it's always like this..."

Pretty sure the time travel logic is a complete mess so I'm not even thinking abou that.

    Cross of Iron - 9/10

Thought this would be in German with subtitles, didn't realise it had an English speaking cast. At any rate a very good war film contrasting the lengths an individual will go to for others and for themselves. Did a great job of showing the brutality of the Eastern Front and the cheapness of human life. Opening credits are some of the best I've seen, a brilliant juxtaposition. Ending was also top notch.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - 5/10

Pretty average, on a par with MI:II which isn't saying much. The Dubai bit was impressive but other than that nothing really stood out. Number 3 still my favourite of the bunch.

    She dives for cheese pasties

    Intouchables - 9/10

I've put off watching this for a while as the problem with subtitled films is that they demand my full attention. I'm glad I finally got around to it.

Genuinely heart-warming. Quite a number of laugh out loud moments too... I've got a nasty feeling that the missus is going to give me grief later for disturbing her sleep. :D

Has anyone seen Bug? Kermode is always bashing on about it. I was going to add it to my lovefilm list but most of the comments are atrocious.
  • Deleted user 15 October 2012 08:50:29
Yeah I've seen it. It isn't bad but almost purely because of Shannon. It has a very play like feel combined with a low budget that is heavily focused on one simple idea.

@dr_swin I liked it! I mean, a lot of the motivations made no sense, but it was awfully pretty to look at.

@Nades Hmmm, I hated The Dictator, one of the least 'funny' films I've seen. That's just my opinion though.

@dr_swin I like it too, it obviously has its flaws but they were as big a deal for me as they clearly are for some.
