Heritage and Morningrise are actually my least favorite Opeth albums. There's some cool parts to Morningrise, but the songs lack coherence and feel like ideas of various qualities bolted together.

I've been absolutely hammering Still Life for the last 10 days or so. Godhead's Lament, Moonlapse Vertigo and Face Of Melinda are probably 3 of top 5 Opeth tunes!

@FuzzyDuck Benighted is one of my favourite Opeth songs, making that an unbroken 30 plus minutes of Opeth at their best. Easily rivals and arguably bests Blackwater Park as their best album.

I just wish everything since BP wasn't so frustratingly inconsistent. Ghost Reveries actually has some of my favourite Opeth riffs, but as an album I really don't rate it.

Yeah all of SL is solid gold really!

I agree about their inconsistency post-BWP. GR is actually my third favourite record of theirs (after SL and MA, YH). They really lost some of their magic when Lindgren left though.

Watershed is patchy but still worthwhile, while I've never met anyone that rates Heritage (outside of the killer rhythm section). That's the beauty of a band like Opeth; your favourite album might be my least favourite, and it's possible to make valid arguments for either side.

I don't know what to make of the new Opeth album. After a few listens I like it but thats about it. I have no urge to revisit it, it's kind of like good background music. I'd much rather listen to Still Life for the 400th time. Easily my favourite album of theres. The Moor still gives me goosebumps, really hope I get to see that song played live in my lifetime.

I like the new Opeth more than Heritage, but agree it's still a bit bland for the most part. It's very, very good, but there are only a few bits that have really grabbed me after a couple of listens.

Having said that it's worth a listen just for the last minute or so of Moon Above, Sun Below.

From what I've listened to so far, no.

New Sanctuary track doing the rounds, although it sounds closer to Nevermore's last album than Sanctuary's previous efforts (as long ago as they were).

Just picked up the new Accept.

Fantastic stuff, Dying Breed itself is up there with their classics.

Had a listen to the new Opeth this morning, honestly I could only hear the sounds of them sniffing their own guffs.

    Completely forgettable.

Really like the new Opeth. In terms of song structures, riffs etc it is in keeping with many of the band's earlier work - albeit not as heavy. But the style and riffing is there. I think that's where Heritage fell down - it didn't retain the essence of the band's sound - whereas Pale Communion does. But I can understand why Mikael made Heritage the way it was - trying to make a clean break.

Are Dragonforce still derided by a lot of metal fans? Quite like their new album (Maximum Overload), picked it up on a whim and I'm rather enjoying it.

Also picked up Hammerfall's (r)Evolution album. Loads of rave reviews but I'm a bit disappointed, it's good but I'd say it's one of their 2nd tier albums.

If you like your Stoner/Doom metal, then check these guys out. New album 'Slab City' is brilliant.

@drhickman1983 I really liked them when they first appeared but their albums got repetitive quickly and their live shows became sloppy as the band decided getting drunk was more important that playing a tight set. Don't know if either are still the case though.

My experience of Dragonforce was similar, I really liked Sonic Firestorm and Inhuman Rampage, but totally lost interest when their 4th album came out.

The new one feels a tad fresher, maybe it's because I've not paid attention to them for a while, and the different vocalist might help as well. No idea how their live performances are these days.

Have the first few Dragonforce album knocking around somewhere, they're good fun. Which is precisely why I enjoyed them and moved away from the "scene" - too many metallers are self-serious and need to crack a smile.

Seeing as Hammerfall were mentioned, behold! The greatest music video ever conceived!

Agreed, new Dragonforce is good fun, Hammerfall bored the tits off me to be honest. Hardly memorable at all.

That Steak track's not bad. It reminds me a lot of Kyuss - I'll have to check 'em out more.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

Their new album has a guest appearance from Garcia himself. Seem to have some friends in high places. Also currently listening to John Garcia's new solo album and it is ruddy good!

Not sure if it's been posted before. But for anyone who bemoaned the lack of an Extreme Metal themed episode of Metal Evolution.
