I mentioned this singer / songwriter in the 2007 albums thread, she deserves more attention. Begin To Hope is her latest album, and the best from what earlier stuff I've heard. I can't recommend it highly enough. She's kind of folky, piano, twangyness, she has such a beautiful voice.

I sort of found her through a bloke in Fopp who recommends me hiphop from time to time, one of her songs was playing and I was instantly interested. I asked him about it, he practically forced me to buy the album! He was talking about a song called Samson, he held up his arm and said "look, I've got goosebumps just talking about it" - which completely sold me.

I usually like hiphop and funk, this is a departure for me but a beautiful one

    Fidelity
    Samson
Hotel Song (not her video, don't bother watching it, just listen)

    :)

I'll prolly be dragged along to see her this weekend at Bonnaroo (going with chicks). Her voice sounds really familiar from what I've heard. Not bad stuff.

Field below or whatever it's called, that's my favourite.....super melancholic.

She's done a few soundtracks I think. Have a good time, I'm quite jealous. Smoke a fat one before you go in!

Absolutely fantastic. My girlfriend introduced me to her a couple of years ago. Apres Moi is my favourite off the latest album but her previous cd, Soviet Kitsch, is her best work IMO.

Just got as far as Apres Moi last nigth and then up to there again on the train today. Apres Moi is still my favourite, spectacular song, but others are starting to really shine.

Samson is fantastic as is One The Radio. The lyrics to On The Radio are just brilliant. So brilliant in fact that I feel compelled to post tham all here!

    This is how it works
    It feels a little worse
Than when we drove our hearse
    Right through that screaming crowd
    While laughing up a storm
    Until we were just bone
    Until it got so warm
That none of us could sleep
    And all the styrofoam
    Began to melt away
We tried to find some words
    To aid in the decay
But none of them were home
    Inside their catacomb
    A million ancient bees
    Began to sting our knees
While we were on our knees
    Praying that disease
Would leave the ones we love
    And never come again

    On the radio
    We heard November Rain
    That solo's really long
    But it's a pretty song
    We listened to it twice
    'Cause the DJ was asleep

    This is how it works
    You're young until you're not
    You love until you don't
    You try until you can't
    You laugh until you cry
    You cry until you laugh
    And everyone must breathe
    Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
    You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
    And stick it into some
    Someone else's heart
    Pumping someone else's blood
    And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
    But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

    And on the radio
    You hear November Rain
    That solo's awful long
    But it's a good refrain
    You listen to it twice
    'Cause the DJ is asleep
    On the radio
    (oh oh oh)
    On the radio
On the radio - uh oh
On the radio - uh oh
On the radio - uh oh
    On the radio

She is quite special, I'm pleased you're liking it. Summer in the City is one of my favourites lyrically.

If you're picking up "Begin to Hope", make sure you get the Bonus Disk which is fantastic - just her and a piano, like (most) of her earlier albums, singing songs of sweetness and light.

Neither did I. Being such a big fan I rushed out to get the new one straight away. A couple of weeks later my HMV were stocking the special edition of the album. Bastards!

I used to like Regina Spektor more before somebody pointed out that she was the Tori Amos of our times.

Ah give it a few listens, it's grower. Overall I'd say it's her best album, though I do personally think Apres Moi (off the latest) is her best song.

I'd disagree with that to be honest. I think Regina is completely unique, she doesn't sound or play like anyone else.

Having watched the Samson video, there is definitely a touch of Amos there. Anyroad, have you listened to Nina Nastasia SP? Awesome stuff, slightly more indie version of folk and less cutesy than Regina. Try Blackened Air first.

You need the bonus album! If you've just bought it from FOPP, take it back under their return policy and demand the special edition :)

For what it's worth, I love the first half of Soviet and a lot of Songs. The compilation Mary Ann meets the Gravediggers(sic) was my first introduction and rather underwhelming, not at all what I would have picked from her back catalogue.

Re: the Tori Amos comparison. I like her a lot, but always mildly disappointed that she appears such a nutjob. Spektor gives me the impression that she's growing up and out of her teenage quirkiness and bizarro lyrics.

I actually got that one second, after I'd got my hands on Soviet Kitsch. It's great though I'd say not as good as SK or Begin to Hope. Got a few top tracks on it though, such as Oedipus, Poor Little Rich Boy, Consequence of Sound, Lacrimosa, Chemo Limo and Us.

Edit: So, uhh, most of the tracks then, haha. Kind of going against what I was saying. Oh well :D

Well thankfully I don't know much if any Tori Amos, so the comparison means nothing to me

I would take it back to Fopp but I've had it for a while and there's no way I've kept the receipt. I'll probably buy it from HMV, rip a copy of the bonus disc then exchange it for something else

Picked up the (recent) album almost impulsively after only seing the advert, but I was pleasantly surprised, and even more interested to learn that there were numerous albums before her new found Begin to Hope popularity.

Very talented, she deserves to be huge.

Super-bump. I've only just got round to listening to some Regina Spektor and she is wonderful. Chemo Limo totally chokes me up. I only have Soviet Kitsch so far - what should I get next?

She's plaing in Liverpool next week - can't wait :)
