I'm surprised they didn't hold this back until the presentation on the 12th.

I expected them to quietly upgrade the MBP to Core 2 Duo and then make a bit of noise over the iMac updates.

Strapline on the invite is "It's showtime", so I'm pretty sure the movie crap is the big deal.

Twice the half of its length.

Personally I am slightly disappointed. This new model seriously reduces the chances of us seeing a single socket, duel core model added to the Mac Pro range.

As fast as this model is likely to be, the use of mobile CPUs and chipsets means that bang for bucks, a desktop based on C2D desktop parts would have been better value for money for users that don't need a fire breathing four core Mac Pro, but still need a fast desktop. Apple will point these people at this new iMac but an AIO isn't the best solution for them.

just ordered the lower end mac mini with the 1gb of ram, works out £150 cheaper than last time I priced it up (when it was the high end). Looks like ram upgrade prices have dropped across the board too, didn't expect that.

Apple is certainly getting more competitive of late .... or Dell is getting less so. Either way, it is fair to say things are generally improving.

However, note that the C2D in the iMac is NOT the C2D in the Dell. Dell, uses desktop parts in ... you know .... desktop machines. The C2Ds in the Dell are the 1066 MHz FSB ones and can get to higher Hz, whereas the iMac have the slower and more expensive mobile parts. This goes for the GPUs also which are mobile versions and run at lower Hz than the equivalent desktop parts.

This happens often with Apple where form will often overrule function. What would add more value to the iMac - a machine which is as small as possible or one which is faster and cheaper? In a laptop, size and weight are very important but is the iMac, a desktop machine, better because it is a few inches smaller than it would be if it used desktop parts?

It is the same with the mini. The mini could be faster and cheaper by using desktop components. It would still be smaller than the Shuttle machines which are more than small enough for most people's needs. Yet it is slower and more expensive in order to make it smaller than it needs to be.

Reading lots of things tonight about a new Cube computer.. apple just filed a patent for it as well. Would explain the price drop on the Mac mini's? They must have big news if they brought out the 24" imac just before the 12th's conferance.

    mmm, mac news.

I was a little miffed when I saw the new minis; I've just bought one myself (the 1.66 core duo, when it was the high end machine); I wouldn't have cared if it was just a boost in spec for the same price, but I could have saved £150, which would have been more than enough to buy a DVD burner to arrive at the same machine.

Not that I'm particularly unhappy about it; the mini is a wonderful machine, the only thing it's slow for is encoding DVDs (took it 6 hours to do a 2 hour movie, thankfully it's not something I do often).

Yep, but would the mini still be virtually silent? The use of laptop parts means that less cooling is required iirc??

In terms of further comparisons with Dell and Apple, I'm working on setting up a couple of research centres at the moment. One of them using Dell small form desktops and one using the budget educational iMacs. The Dell machines are deceptive, as they have saved on space by having external power supplies (like the XBox 360), so you have a relatively small machine, but loads of cables (power supply, cablke keyboard, cabled mouse, and cables for connecting to the 17" display). They cost the same as the iMacs, but the research centre running the Apples looks a hell of alot slicker, far less cluttered, and has the advantage of running both OSX and, with Boot Camp, XP if necessary.

Isn't that an unfair comparison? You are taking an AIO Mac and comparing it to a compact desktop .... wouldn't a more logical comparison be between the Mini and the Dell compact desktop? You'll note of course that they both have large external power bricks.

The noise issue would play out similarly. Is the Dell any more noisy than the Mini? Is the fact that the Mini is smaller than the small Dell much of an advantage? Is the higher price and lower performance you get from going so small worth the extra cost and smaller size?

Of course for me the answer might be yes .... but is because I want to run OSX .... the compromises made to achieve the form factor however are just a hindrance for most (not all) desktop applications.
