    @Tuffty

Figured. I like Stringer too. Damn.

I like it, but I wouldn't say I'm loving it. But still, I hear it gets better still so who knows, it may just creep up into being one of my favourite shows eventually. Some good quotes though Omar's court scene was great.

The inspiration for Omar has died. The article contains a few mild spoilers, if you haven't seen all 5 seasons yet.

For those that have, you may be surprised that he had a few scenes in The Wire. Even opposite Omar.

    Seen here on the left.

And if you have seen the Corner, you will be astonished to find that he was married to the real life Fran Boyd!!!

Series 3 of the wire is my fave series of tv ever. I loved breaking bad and oz as well but there is just something about that season of the wire that edges it out.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

I started watching The Wire again last night. Season 1, ep1.
Yet again I struggled to make out what some of the guys were saying at first. But, watching it a second time albeit several years later, it's easier to see how things are setting up.

I've just started watching this for the first time and I'm five episodes in and REALLY struggling. There has been literally nothing happening at all... for five hours. I know it's slow but I like plenty of other similarly paced things (True Detective was extremely leisurely, for example) but I find myself unable to concentrate on this as it's not holding my interest whatsoever.

Does something exciting finally happen after episode five? I never normally quit on a programme, not at least before the end of the season, but I'm thinking of giving up unless something actually happens, to somebody.

@thefilthandthefury I think the 1st 5 episodes are slow. You are on the cusp of being sucked into the greatest TV show ever made, so give it at least another 2 episodes. You might be surprised by just how much it might get its hooks into you.

stick with it until at least the end of season 1 before you judge.

Well that's the thing - it has so much acclaim and almost all of my friends love the show, comparing its quality to things that we all love in common... so I assume there MUST be something else to it.

Even if it does turn out to be amazing, these first five episodes are so non-eventful it can only be described as poorly written thus far.

Though I did like one scene - where McNulty and a partner were investigating an old murder and communicated only via swearing the entire time.

I watched the entire first series of breaking bad and thought the same.

    Dull.

See, I only just watched that recently too and went into it expecting to HATE it. Drug and gang storylines tend to bore me senseless. With Breaking Bad though, I was hooked from the very first scene. I had to eat my hat, as it were.

The Wire hooked me after the pistol whipping incident at the end of episode 3.
I'd switched off after the first 10 minutes twice prior to that.
Looking back, one of my favourite scenes in the whole 60 hours is the opening sequence. (The tale of Snot Booger and the card game)

Started watching this right after I had finished The Sopranos (I recently found out how useful XBMC can be). Finished season 1 last night and 2 episodes into second season...totally hooked.

Apparently that story is true. Dominic West's accent in that scene is hilarious. From that scene to the next is an incredible shift.

You are a factory of sadness.

Not at all - it seems like you don't have the patience for a slow burner.

I've watched and enjoyed other programmes considered slow, but they all at least had a basic hook and had characters. Currently in this (currently being the key word) they're extraordinarily paper thin and uninteresting in every way.

So far this has been like watching show about data entry or something.

I found it really hard work for the first few episodes, you do need to concentrate to understand the accents I think, if you're surfing and chatting at the same time I think you'd struggle. After I started getting the lingo though, it's probably my favourite ever series, I'd probably rather watch the Wire again than BB (which was also amazing). I'd give it until the end of series one.

Oh and unlike some series, The Wire just gets better and better (though 2 is perhaps a slight disappointment). Series 4 is probably the best series of TV ever produced in my opinion, absolute genius.

I've heard that about the dialogue but that's one area that I've found pretty much fine. There's only the odd thing where I'm lost but you can usually work it out through context.

The hook of taking down a notorious, unseen drug king pin? The hook of watching the Baltimore drug lords taking down a lone 'Robin Hood' type of figure? The hook of seeing the city of Baltimore presented in the most realistic way possible by a man who worked there for over 15 years?

If you think characters like D'Angelo (after the chess scene), Bodie (after the youth offender/grandma situation), Omar and Bubbles are thin I'm not sure what to say - they all get good screen time and some development over the first five episodes.

Agreed about some characters being thin at the start though - especially the police.

The next episode for you to watch is where they actually get said 'wire' up and it kicks into overdrive :D

I had to watch S1 with subtitles the first time - had a hard time keeping up with the slang and the amount of names being thrown about.

I remember it being slow to start. Then I remember watching about 5 episodes a day until it finished.

I might have to watch this again soon.

I went into it indifferent to be honest, didn't know what to expect.

Found it really dull. 1 series is plenty to make judgement despite everyone telling me that it gets better later on. I just don't have the time.
