I don't know if that improved dramatically but the beginning was so fucking awful I just kind of tuned out. And I LIKED most of the eps people have been bitching about.

I actually really enjoyed it. They've managed to make the Cybermen threatening again, I like the redesign, and you can see they were saving a lot of their budget for some of the FX work in this.

So then, next week we find out the Doctor's real name.

I have a theory about it, but I won't share it.

I see John Hurt has also blabbed about the big revelation in the anniversary special.

SPOILERS FOR THE 50th ANNIVERSARY! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T READ IF YOU WANT TO GO IN BLIND

John Hurt plays the REAL 9th Doctor, the one who took part in much of the Time War. His actions during this time were so atrocious that the Doctor "chose" to forget them entirely. This makes Ecclestone the 10th Doctor, Tennant the 11th and Matt Smith the 12th Doctor - meaning he only has one regeneration left. Tennant and Smith's Doctors initially refuse to believe this, before regaining their memory.

Me too. Very far from woeful and a lot better than most of the last couple of seasons. I think maybe people just have unrealistic expectations because Gaiman wrote it and were expecting another "The Doctor's Wife".

On the subject, who would you like to write a Dr Who episode?

I'd like (in no particular order): China Mieville, Terry Pratchett, Joss Whedon. I think Mieville n particular would be amazing if he turned his hand to it.

Yah, started awfully but picked up. It actually (gasp) engineered itself in a situation of actual drama and suspense there. The thing is he still relied on a some nebulously defined function of the sonic screwdriver, even though it was actually *completely* unnecessary. really. Could have just slapped with the glove and be done with it.

Yeah, in my 30s on the internet, bitching about the writing of a kids show.

I thought that was good, certainly much better than some of this series, especially when the kids were in a cybercoma.

I liked the new look for the Cybermen, they actually seemed a threat, rather than pantomime troop from before.

I enjoyed that. He found a way not o make the kids annoying, and the cybermen felt a real threat.

I found the kids annoying, but at least they had some point to them and didn't get too much screentime.

It really did just get better and better. Meh to start with, but great at the end.

And damn it, could NOT ignore her eyes.

Following on from my spoiler-heavy post above, so don't read unless you read that:

I seem to remember the Doctor already having used up a regeneration on something that wasn't a regeneration. Can anyone confirm this? If true, it means the revelation in the anniversary would make Matt Smith the LAST incarnation. And he's already revealed he's not going to be hanging around for long... could Clara, the "impossible woman" maybe be the 13th Doctor?

River has her own regenerations due to being conceived inside the Tardis doesn't she? She's half Time Lord. She's back in next week's episode too, which could be interesting.

Actually, they cribbed all that from a forum post theorising about earlier spoilers about Hurt being the Real Ninth Doctor. The alleged dialogue was mere fanwank, but, hey, THE SUN!

From what Hurt said, it sounds more like he's the Valeyard.

    @Daryoon

Sources? I know it's the Sun, by they do attribute it to Hurt himself, quote marks and all.

The Valeyard would be VERY interesting, and something that's been on the horizon for a while now given that he is a potential Doctor existing between the 12th and 13th.

Wow. Easily the best episode of this series ... Gaiman is a marvellously small revelation of sorts.

    BIG SPOILER AHOY:

    Nope, Natty Longshoe's Comical Castle.

    Otherwise known as Castell Coch.

It seems a stretch, but I'm making a mental note of both the name Natty Longshoe (it was said so many damn times this episode) and the emperor. I have a feeling both will come up again at some point in the future, given modern Who's propensity for starting to drop hints about future plot threads at a very early stage.

Also, can anyone confirm my suspicion earlier that it was indeed a glimpse of the 6th Doctor in the title sequence?

I really liked this episode as well, though the kids were as annoying as expected, thankfully they didn't get too much screen time. The new cybermen are great too, I'd like to see them face the daleks again now that it would be a much fairer fight.

I think the Daleks have been retired for quite a while now given they've been so overused in the last few years, IIRC. I'd like to see more and more classic enemies coming back. This season we've had the Ice Warriors and the Great Intelligence though, which is nice. I'd love to see the Sea Devils again, as well as the Yetis (quite possible now we've had the Great Intelligence), Zygons, and the Rutans (would love to see an exploration of the Sontarant-Rutan war).

I also still live in hope that we get a resolution to the Doctor's Daughter thing, since that proposed spin-off series got junked it's just left a big unaddressed plot dangler flying around the galaxy.

Meh, the episode felt pretty rushed to me. Some cool ideas (only slightly let down by the fact Matt Smith doesn't seem to be able to do accents at all reliably), but there were probably too many cool ideas to do properly in the time they had, even though they packed the first five minutes into the end of last weeks show, as it turned out.

Regarding the enemies next episode from what they showed at the end of this episode (and what I've read on wikipedia) it's pretty obvious who it is (at least pre the inevitable twist).
