Well I wasn't expecting to say this, but game number 3 is done and dusted. Day of the Tentacle. What a game!

I turned my back on point-and-click games back in the 90's after finding frustration in just how particular you have to be in order to complete them. It's always annoying when you think of a perfectly reasonable and achievable solution to a puzzle, but the game itself has other ideas. The Broken Sword games were particularly annoying in this respect. With Day of the Tentacle though, that was never an issue.

On top of that, it's general structure makes for a far more appealing and engaging experience. Using the same environment in 3 different time zones meant that you could never really get lost. The mummies are a great way to find subtle hints (if you ever do get stuck) and the length of the game is spot on. The humour and presentation is just the icing on an amazingly well constructed game. I almost feel gutted I didn't play it back in the day.

    01. Super Mario Bros. (NES) 02/01/17
    02. Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) 02/01/17
    03. Day of the Tentacle (PS4) 06/01/17

Now, back to Super Mario Bros. 3. I'm about half way through and still have a handful of lives left to scrape by with!

    @DangerousDave_87

Play point and click games with a healthy dose of walk throughs. The point should be to enjoy the story and not to wrestle with obscure puzzles. More recent games seem to have surpassed the design faults of 90s point and click games .

Where do we stand on games you can't play because of a bug? Been playing NFS: rivals the last couple of days and now I can't accelerate. Tried restating the game, turning of the console and it still won't work.

Seems the only option for me is to try deleting everything and redownloading the game (17gb) plus patches, which I don't really want to do.

Probably serves my right for playing a nfs game (actually think they're rather fun(

    Also got number two done:

    01. The Unfinished Swan (PSV) 01-Jan
    02. Azkend 2: the World Below (PSV) 07-Jan

Askend is a match 3 puzzler with a storyline, though within the game there are different types of levels, power ups (for two different styles) and wasn't really that difficult in the end. Enjoyable but I'm sure I must have fat finger syndrome as my vita's screen didn't recognise some of the swipes. Not bad at all for a PS+ and is cross buy for PS4 too.

Continuing on with Mass Effect 1 & the Deadly Tower of Monsters ...

Figured I'd have a crack at this in 2017 as my backlog is flippin' huge.

Game 1: The Witcher 3 - Bit of a cheat as I left this for months and only had three of four main quests to complete. Finished it off last night (stil took three hours). Great overall, but the story became a bit convoluted by the end. Bought Blood and Wine in the PSN sale so will have a bash at that soon.

Game 2: Battlefield 1 - Compleatedcthe campaign and have put 30+ hours into MP so while I'll continue to dip in and out consider this one complete. SP is OK, the Gallipoli and 'plane' sections were a hightlight. Played more MP in this than anything since Bad Company 2 so it's a winner in my opinion, particularly 'Operations'.

Not taken part in these threads, though I've followed last year's edition.
I might actually get around to the backlog of games this year, so I thought I'd join in. I'm going to reserve the right to drop in FF14 whenever a new patch/expansion comes out :p

By the way, when do we consider a week over? Is it Monday to Sunday? Probably irrelevant :p

    Week 1: Final Fantasy XV
Rough diamond, with a story far too focused on the protagonist, but there's a lovely flow to the battles.

    #01 The Last Guardian
    #02 Frog Fractions
    #03 Refunct
    #04 Morphopolis

    #05 Ether One
I liked Ether One but there's no way I'd have the patience for a game like this without resorting to guides. It's absurdly hard to draw the lines between some of the puzzles and it plods along it's narrative at a pace similar to games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Dear Esther.

Still, it was a more interesting story than it deserved to be and I'll probably try the follow up when it comes out on VR. 6/10

I tailed off quickly last year, but I'll try again this year. Any links will be to reviews I've done of the games.

    1. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney - 3DS
    2. Spheroids - Wii U

@rice_sandwich I've now got an urge to play the first two Monkey Island games again, though the idea of sitting down with a guide next to me doesn't appeal. I hate referring to guides. It's not something i'm used to doing.

I do have all 5 chapters of King's Quest ready to go though, so may give those a go and see how they compare!

    @DangerousDave_87

I play until I get really stuck then check a guide. If I can't solve something within 15 minutes then I'll check. No point wasting time on obscure puzzles imo.

#1 - Super Mario Run -iOS
    #2 - Outlast - Xbox one - 07/01/17

Quite scary and intense, must play with sound on loud to get that dreadful feeling, at least it works on me. Not too bad a game either, though I was hoping for it to be over halfway through! :p

    1/1/17 - Blackwell Deception - 8/10
    8/1/17 - Abzu - 9/10

A very short, visually stunning underwater themed game with superb design and great music. A relaxing and enjoyable experience more than a game as it doesn't really have any challenge to it. It would have been 10/10 except for the fact that some of the hot spots you have to activate only show up when you're right next to them so I spent a bit more time than necessary hunting around near the end of the game.

    #01 08/01 Titanfall 2 (PS4) - 10/10

Almost knocked it down a point for feeling far too hard, but seems unfair to judge it based on my ineptitude.

    #01 Machinarium
    #02 Thomas Was Alone
    #03 Hitman GO
    #04 Lara Croft GO

Currently got 3 others on the go (1 main, and 2 indies to play while watching tv shows with the gf). Promising first week but I always seem to start out strong and then it all falls away as the year goes on.

Still, the goal is to clear some backlog more than spend out on new stuff, so it's going ok so far.

Well I'm (almost) certainly not going to make 52, but I'll use this as a way of tracking how much I'm eating into my backlog.

I'm going to have Guitar Hero Live as my first one, because I got through the single player career to the end credits. It's a bit of a cheat entry, because playing all the songs through once on regular difficulty isn't exactly what GH is all about, and I'm by no means done with the game (in fact it's a constant distraction at the moment). Given how much time I'm spending on it, though, I think it should get some recognition in the list!

I've just seen the ending credits of Rayman Legends so that's going in as number 2. Again, a bit of a cheat entry as I started this ages ago and I'm not done with it yet. Brilliant game, one of the best 2D platformers I've played. Frustrating final boss, although the generous checkpointing stops it from becoming too annoying.

    1. GH Live (2/2/17)
    2. Rayman Legends (9/2/17)

14 hours into Mass Effect and my problem is I'm ignoring the main storyline and picking up all the sidequests ... still I'm enjoying it (even if I am very late to the party).

Also playing Sky Force Anniversary, Ratchet and Clank & Alien Breed in addition to a few others .

I'd like to play through Mass Effect 2 and 3 some time but ideally with the DLC which is overpriced and never goes on sale on PC :( (finding which HDD has my ME1 save is the easy bit...)

I've never played any of the ME games so with number 4 on sale this year thought I'd go through them (even though I know #4 doesn't follow on from #3), I'm one of these people who prefers to start a series from the beginning. I'm enjoying it so far ... I may get the DLC if I'm in a 'completist' mood, but I know then I'll get nothing else completed this year ..
