    @Ror
Sounds like a plan. I finished AC Syn a few days back so due to start a new title.

@DUFFMAN5 Nice one. It's not all that long either, considering. I know it's kind of earned a reputation as 'that game you have to play four times to get all the story', but it's very, very manageable. And that's also not strictly true - each time you go for another ending, you start from about 2/3 of the way through. It's maybe 4 hours you have to redo, and you carry all your gear forward, so each consecutive time is even faster. Plus, on the second time through you get a fair bit of new stuff to experience. Well worth doing.

This might have gotten lost at the bottom of the preivous page, so I'll quote it for the new one.

    Ror wrote:
Yoko Taro directing, Yosuke Saito producing, Keiichi Okabe doing the soundtrack, fuckin' Akihiko Yoshida on character design, and Platinum developing. I don't think that could get any better, to be honest! And surely some of the Okami people must be at Platinum..?

Also, that clip from above is actually from last October. The German guy in it conducted this interview (interview is in English, just get past the intro).

Emil is in the game in some capacity, and it's interesting that they immediately shoot down the 'only on PS4' question. It'd be nice if it made it to XBO as well, but I imagine they're probably looking at PS4 and PC.

I do hope it comes to XB1 as Nier is on my all time favorite games list. I played it on Xbox 360 and PS3. Played all the endings bar one on the PS3. If it was backwards compatible I would deffo replay.

Same here, played on both 360 and PS3 (all endings). If it's a timed exclusive on PS4 (as that's definitely confirmed) then I'll go for that version, need to get it in my life ASAP.

edit: sorry I mean confirmed coming to PS4 and XB1 not yet confirmed, not confirmed timed exclusive.

As of 5:00am it is installed onto the 360 hard drive ;)
Not too sure when I play it as the 360 is in the lounge and not my "gaming/ironing pile" room. Hopefully an hour or two at the weekend.

Well I started this earlier, well Nier 1. Brilliant score. Dad/daughter thing will leave me in floods of tears no doubt :) just like a certain other game that had that dynamic did. Since having children I'm soppy as shite.

Anyway only 30 mins in, and wondering around the village, but so far it has grabbed me. I should get some time over the weekend to get stuck in. Can you adjust skill on the fly, I'm on easy as I'm more interested in the story than fighting, but obviously a bit of a challenge is good. The first big fight in the beginning was nice and fluid, loads of "baddies"

I don't know if you can change difficulty tbh, though the game is pretty easy on normal anyway. Also, I'd recommend barreling through the first hour or so, as it can be a little slow to get going. Once you're on your way to the Lost Shrine it's all good.

I really should try and play Nier again, it has that kind of status that makes me think I might actually really like it.

I found the first few hours very boring, iirc.

It is very slow to start, so I can understand that. It takes a fair old while to get going, and pretty much everything it does is competent, rather than exemplary. But when it all comes together, it's fantastic.

This is currently one of my most anticipated games. A sequel helmed by Taro Yoko and developed by Platinum. Yes please.

    EDIT

Me too! Akihiko Yoshida though, so that was never in doubt.

    I can't believe it either.

    Early 2017 though? Sigh.

Oh my fucking god at the boss footage. This just shot straight to the top of my most anticipated list.

That visual design. The combat and movement options. That music. How the theme syncs up with the boss' actions. The bullet hell. It looks fucking fantastic 0_0

It meant labouriously typing it out with a DS4 but fuck it, here it is

Does the original play similarly to how that looks? Because man am I up for that.

    Like, right now.

Original is rough around the edges graphically, music is absolutely phenomenal and gameplay is - whilst basic in some cases - great fun.

Either way, if you haven't played the first you must! One of my favourites from the last generation.

Can't wait for the sequel. Hoping it's not a straight up fighting game though and still has down time in towns etc like the first.

This is a hell of a step up from the first, in terms of combat. That's expected with Platinum developing, but the basic theme is still there in the first game - huge bosses, sword combat, bullet hell stuff. It's absolutely worth playing, even if only to get you more hyped for the sequel.

Sony should've shown it in their conference.

In fact, why not a small five minute showreel consisting of Nier's boss gameplay, Gravity Rush 2, and Persona 5? It's a shame this got buried, that footage would've got a lot of attention.

Man, maybe I need to track down a copy of the original. Pretty much every day I fire up that vid just to get immersed in that visual audio feast of the senses. It's been a long time since a piece of promotional gumpf has got me so hyped up for a game.

No CGI trailer, no 'vertical slice' or target render, no stage posing 'live' gameplay. Just an unedited 3 minute portion of a boss fight, that's all it needed to blow me away. It stole E3 as far as I'm concerned.

What always put me off the original Nier was the ARPG aspect. I don't think I've ever really liked a JRPG which had realtime combat aside from maybe Xenoblade, I've tried so many and not liked them that it's become a major turn-off for me. And given that Nier doesn't have great rep for good combat even from fans of the style I'm unsure whether to jump in.

Maybe I'll try to buy a copy to support the devs, but Youtube a playthrough :)

NieR's combat isn't bad by any means. Perfunctory might be the best word. There's a fair bit of variety in there at least, with a decent number of different weapons, a handful of fun magic spells, and words, which are modifiers for your abilities.

I wrote a sort of retrospective for it a while back that I would link you to, but it might be a little spoiler-y. There's no actual plot spoilers or anything in it, but it might be a bit too blatant about certain themes etc.

Yeah, but I don't like real-time JRPG combat in general is my point, not that it's bad :)

It's a major reason why I'm so looking forward to Automata (isn't it time for thread name change?) with Platinum doing the combat, as Bayonetta is among my all-time top 5.
