"Greater good", as I stated, does not refer to the greater good of people, it refers to the greater good of the state. If you guys really didn't get then, well I don't know what to say. I thought it was pretty obvious.

And I didn't say it resulted in the greater harm, just that it resulted in a devaluation of life. Big difference.

I'm not involving myself in this particular debate (because I don't understand what you're all on about), but if you say something and a whole bunch of people misunderstand it, it's usually you saying it wrong rather than the rest of the world being stupid.

Surely the greater good of the people under the state and the greater good of the state coincide quite happily? Can't quite understand what other 'greater good' a state would have in mind that didn't include the people under it.

I guess what FWB is trying to get at is some sort of statement about the dangers of states where an ideology is considered more important than individual liberty or life. The "greater good" doesn't really seem the correct phrase.

Having an argument about a roughly-phrased anti-state anarchist thought doesn't seem much of a way to further the discussion either way.

It makes perfect sense if you've experienced such a regime, but anyway, yeah, you're right, it has nothing to do with anarchism. Twas a strawman being built.

Five men arrested this morning across London who were apparently a 'potential threat to the Pope'

Police searches at their homes have found no dangerous materials so far, so i'm wondering if these people were trying to carry out his arrest?

    From that story
    "The five men are 26, 27, 36, 40 and 50 years old."
It'll be spooky if they turn out to be 5 of tomorrow's lottery numbers!*

    Calling all Pope protestors

My conclusion is that the Nazi remarks were a deliberate attempt to deflect the anticipated protests about the scandal of the child sex abuse cover-ups in the RCC.
