Registered 7 years agoI'd love them to address that: something along the lines of 'We've altered Rimmer to reflect Lister's current age' followed by a scene of Rimmer being pissed off, Cat making snide remarks and Lister laughing at him. -

Registered 11 years agoI saw Back to Earth randomly on Dave the other day (which is about the only way I ever see anything on Dave, but there you go). I thought it was surprisingly good - if not actually funny. Certainly very reminiscent of the last few series in terms of its reused gags, but they had the fundamentals right. If anything it just felt like a TV movie of days gone by - too long with too little material. Personally I reckon the lack of a laughter track didn't help either, but there you go.
In other news, Dave are repeating all the old BBC series in the buildup to a new series they're doing. For reasons best known to themselves though, they're doing this in reverse order, so they're currently as far as series 8. While it is an anathema to me to look up the listings for Dave, I have done so and discovered that they seem to be showing them from about half ten in the morning every Saturday, so at this rate set your recorders for the 6th of October, when they might be doing series 4.Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Registered 8 years agoLong time fan of Red Dwarf, well up until series 7 and 8 which I didn't like that much, but this is going to be shit isn't it. We all know it, but we'll all still watch it.
They look so old now as well. -

Registered 6 years agoI'll be there for October 4th, it can't be any worse than Back to Earth was (which wasn't completely shit, but it came close)...
...can it?
EDIT
Also, have I turned over two pages at once? Red Dwarf X? What happened to Red Dwarf IX? Is Back to Earth supposed to represent that? It takes place after Red Dwarf X, doesn't it, because they reference that series in Back to Earth?
/slightly confused

Registered 8 years agoI gather there is a laughter track at least so it might save it from being completely shit.
I really hated how they went with the 'movie' approach of series 7.

Registered 8 years agoIt's not a laughter track, it's filmed in front of a studio audience.
And yes, Back to Earth counts as Red Dwarf IX. -

Registered 8 years agoI actually meant that it was filmed in front of a studio audience, I just called it a laughter track.....for some reason. -

Just heard about the date for series 10 \o/ Can't wait. I know it won't be as good as RD of old but goddammit I need more from the boys from the Dwarf. -

Registered 8 years agoClearly series 7 and 8 weren't as good as the preceding series, but I have found in retrospect they aren't actually as bad as I remembered them initially.
What this retrospective reminder of the past series has shown though, is that at it's best Red Dwarf is one of the most inventive sitcoms ever, and definitely one of the funniest. -

I'm looking forward to it, caught quite a few of the reruns of the older series on Dave and it's got me in the mood. -

Registered 5 years agoSaw the reruns of the older series over the last month, and while it's definitely aged poorly some of it was still funny, particularly the earlier series.
So because I haven't paid attention, what happened between Red Dwarf and the whole crew being rebuilt by nanobots in the latest ones I watched, and what appears to be just Lister, Rimmer*, Kryten and Kat alive in the latest trailers?
*Realise he's not actually alive.

The trailer for X looks good. S3&4 are probably my favourites. -

The ship was being eaten by a engineered virus, so they all abandoned ship. Our 4 stayed behind to try and fix it. The assumption is, in the gap, they did manage to get the antidote from the mirror universe and save the ship (this was the originally intended ending to Series 8, seen here ). Then the now resurrected living Rimmer must've died again, and Kochanski left.
So because I haven't paid attention, what happened between Red Dwarf and the whole crew being rebuilt by nanobots in the latest ones I watched, and what appears to be just Lister, Rimmer*, Kryten and Kat alive in the latest trailers?

Not that such things have much meaning in a show where characters can have their appendix taken out repeatedly

Registered 10 years agoI will watch it with hope in my heart but very low expectations. The thing is the only scenario I can imagine that would explain the poor scenes in the trailers is that there isn't any better material to choose from.
Series 7 & 8 were utterly dire, and Back to Earth was so bad it's easier to believe that it was deliberately so, or just pretend it never happened. I don't think there's any doubt now that Doug Naylor simply can't write Red Dwarf on his own, it needed both of them for the magic to happen. -

Read that Graun article. Might have made myself a bit too hopeful. As long as it isn't completely terrible, right?
