@ResidentKnievel Har har ;) No, the Scythe cooler is installed inside a Mountain Mods BobSlay V2 case (my first build ever).

I don't think I could stand a perspex box, every spec of dust would be visible and I would spend most of my time cleaning it out. It was bad enough on my old case when it had a perspex side and I could see every bit of dirt in there.

Tom's Hardware recommends the Zalman CNPS8900 Quiet.

It's smaller than most other low profile coolers, almost as good as a Noctua low profile cooler and relatively cheap. Only reason not to get one is if you don't like the colour.

Compared to the Scythe it's twice as quiet while cooling just as well.
Noted, once I have some cash to burn of a gift scenario coming up, I'll check it.

If anyone's interested, TechPowerup reviewed the MSI 760 ITX I'm using in my newest build and gave it a 9.2.

Got my Silverstone PP05-E flex cable set from Amazon yesterday and a Lian Li HD-323 3.5 to 2x 2.5 inch adapter. Took everything out of the SG05 and rebuilt the whole thing from scratch. Very happy with the results!

I will need to watch out for dust though because after two weeks of use, there was quite a bit of dust inside the case. A home-made dust filter might do the trick, perhaps? Magnetic strips + nylon stockings or something.

EDIT: By the way, those thin blue SATA connectors are Silverstone CP11's.

Say, any AMD users here? Would like to hear some impressions on their GPU's & CPU's as well: which are best for gaming etc.?

You will never have a smooth or trouble-free experience in owning either, but they're cheap which puts them in the okay ballpark.

Makes sense. Which AMD CPU would go hand in hand with, let's say, a R9 280X?

For 'High End' gaming I'd have no idea these days but for basic gaming I built my boy a PC based on the A10-5700 using the integrated graphics last year and it's been surprisingly good for stuff like the LEGO games, Kerbal Space Program, Sonic Transformed and Civ 5.

Although this is at 1280x1024, and I'm sure 1080p would be too much of a stretch.

@kingcrowbar Had a good read on those APU's, interesting technology to say the least. However, I need 1080p60fps so a dedicated GPU is a must for me ;)

No, not really. In fact, I was hoping to see some updates on how Benwah's 770 build was coming along...

    It's a great success!

It's TINY, silent, and plenty fast.

    case SG05
    motherboard MSI Z87I GAMING AC
GPU gtx 770 msi twin frozr
CPU xeon 1230 v3 (undervolted 70 mv is still stable)
CPU cooler NT06 (fit noctua F12 pwm underneath)
ram 16 gb crucial ballistix sport very low profile (cas 8/9/9/24, 1.4v, 1600)
sfx 450 + short flat cables
    2.5" 1tb ssd

to install the 770 I had to temporarily remove the front fan, not bad.
Oh yeah, i replaced it with a noctua s12a just like you did. :)

I might take it on a plane as carry-on once or twice a year, and a bunch of times to a friends house 2 miles away. :)

Why on earth did you purchase a Xeon over an i5-4670K?
That Xeon is locked to 3.3 Ghz, whereas the i5-4670K will always overclock to at least 4.2Ghz without creating any extra noise (especially with Noctua coolers)
If you bought it for cheap hyperthreading then you've made a bit of a blunder there as hyperthreading makes next to fuck all difference with gaming, unlike clockspeed which does make a considerable difference.

Also you've made a typographic mistake there. 1GB SSD?

    Otherwise nice build though.

Don't think it's overkill. 16GB ram is pointless though, unless you're video/photo editing benwah?

I did some benchmarks and found my score would rank 12th out of 6912 firestrike scores submitted to 3dmark who used i5-4670K (yes specifically K model) and gtx 770 combination. Sure not all those people are overclocking, but I still ranked above most of the overclocked scores.
    (I had #3/1158 for xeon + 770 scores)
    my score: 7757

For the "firestorm extreme" test, which is only run by people who pay for 3dmark and are likely overclocking, my score would rank #38/1196 submitted for 4670K + gtx 770 combo.
    my score: 3915

So I conclude my purchase decision was not an outrageous mistake.
In fact my box is near the top of the heap against similar setups.
The CPU did run @ 3700 via turbo during the test.

It's pointless for games, except as use as a ramdisk for big textures (example: arma 3). I do own a fancy micro 4/3 camera capable of nice videos, so who knows maybe I will do some photo/video editing.

I paid $150 for the ram. The 8GB equivalent cost $90.
    So it's possible I wasted $60.

I chose it because it was very low profile, it made installing the NT06 easier. Also it runs cas 9 @ 1.35v by default.
And $150 with free shipping was very attractive.

I found a review of the ram, and a chart showing how it can be overclocked . To my surprise the chart was totally reliable.

I ran the ram at cas 8 1.4v and got a 3% gain in 3dmark firestrike.
    Cas 9 @ 1866 1.5v got it up to 4%.

Yeah it's not much, but it was a fun quick exercise in geekery and didn't cost anything extra.

I overclocked the video card also with MSI afterburner:
    memory default 1753
    memory oc 1924

    core default 1137
    core oc 1262

I tested the hell out of this combo to make sure it was stable and artifact free.

that got me another 4% on the game benchmark score.
8% total isn't so exciting is it.
But was enough to rank me almost at top for scores submitted to 3dmark with same CPU/GPU combo.

Interesting that I got the same benefit from overclocking RAM as I did from overclocking the video card.

I'm pretty ashamed of the cable management right now, even with the flat short cables I bought and so little in it.

I do have a nice picture from another site that shows what a tight fit the GTX 770 is in this case, it might make you laugh:

I love this pic because it shows how tiny the SG05 is:

Only thing I would change is the cpu cooler, I'd get a corsair closed loop watercooler.
Put the radiator behind the front fan and done. No more need for a cpu fan.
