His dealer probably topped himself the day after Hunter did, all that revenue disappearing like that would have been hard to take.

    This space left intentionally blank.

Am I the only one who thinks he sounds like a selfish, self-indulgent arsehole?

    an awesome selfish self-indulgent arsehole
  • Deleted user 10 January 2013 17:03:42
    @MetalDog Yes.
  • Deleted user 10 January 2013 17:05:16
Self-indulgent, yes, definitely, but I'm not sure where you're getting the selfish part from.

Yeah but he did it in a funny way. And in the end isn't that what's important?
  • Deleted user 10 January 2013 17:11:07
Isn't that mostly the stories of his fictional persona? He was always a remarkable blend of fact and fiction.

He's not the selfish self-indulgent arsehole we deserve, but maybe he's the selfish self-indulgent arsehole we need right now.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

I don't know - if he actually did it, it's cunty. If he didn't, fair enough.

You don't have to hate the whole of a person because they've done cunty things, but you shouldn't celebrate the cuntiness because you like the rest of them.

It's more that we stand in awe of someone so nakedly, uncaringly doing exactly what he wants.

LB, you really are a massive geek.

I understand the awe and the amusement - it's the admiration that foxes me =)

More importantly Metaldog, you're assuming that he was a total cunt to everyone and that's simply not true. He was highly empathetic to those in need and a great believer in manners and the underdog. Basically he was sticking up for what I would call for most 'moderate, intelligent people' in the face of overwhelming stupidity, arrogance and abuses by those we're supposed to respect and honour.

Perhaps he just like being against the establishment, being contrary for the sake of sheer fucking contrariness. It goes without saying that without people prepared to speak their mind, prepared to be an individual and hold their own opinion, we're all just the same pathetic clones who really need to brush our teeth because that fixed, rictus grin from being force-fed shit, day in, day out and not questioning it is unappealing.

EDIT:: I admire him because he refused absolutely and utterly to compromise and conform. His strength of will to uphold his own values and beliefs in the face of utter social rejection and the role of 'the outsider' is admirable.

I admire him because I could never ever be him in any way, shape or form. He was utterly unique.

De Quincey just turned in his grave.

Probably to find his opium pipe.

I'm not assuming he was a total cunt all the time - no one is. You can admire the non-cunty bits with passion and still think the cunty bits are cunty. I'm just getting the impression that the cunty bits are being given at the very least a free pass and at worse praise simply because he was who he was and that isn't right. That's Jimmy Saville territory.

HurbleBurble, I trust you are fully admiring of my current lack of willingness to submit to peer pressure and the trending opinion in this instance ;)

If all junkies could write well then I reckon the appeal would wear off real quick.

@Khanivor Irvine Welsh does a pretty good job of post-junkie nihilistic fiction.

Pretty much every great author of our time was a massive junky. I heard Shakespeare was well into his poppers.

His writing was uniquely savagely brilliant. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is great fun, but he was a political maverick who exposed the rotting underbelly of American politics and society. I'm not sure he was that massive a cunt to others, in the grand scheme of things, although he was a difficult man to be friends with, by all accounts. I don't think he liked people much, as a rule.

They fired his ashes from a cannon atop a 150ft gonzo symbol tower, exploding him everywhere. Maybe that was a cuntish thing to do, but I think it had style.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Well, you may never get it then. You are seeing things in very black and white, whereas he writes in a crazy way about seriously crazy things.

Cuntish by most people's standard. Yes. The mother fucker shot himself in the head, if it;s a consolation to you he must not have been happy.

Did see and write thing in a true way beyond yours and mine blinkered view, fuck yes.
