Be nice if they can pull it off. Procedural generation is great, but as Sir, You are Being Hunted proved: it can wear thin relatively quickly.

If they can get a tight gameplay loop with some risk/reward in there, and don't overextend, then this is totally doable. Elite was made by just two guys, lest we forget, so this should be twice as good with the four of 'em!

And now I've got a raging hard on, thanks.

Seriously, I'm now so ridiculously excited!

Er...about No Man's Sky, not OptimusPube's raging hard on, I should clarify.

So I'm gathering that YouTube link isn't for a game then, otherwise the posts above would be just weird ;-)

Gosh, this is the surprise as well as the best and most interesting game unveiled yesterday evening.

... the first ten seconds of the trailer gave me an 'Endless Ocean' vibe, which is a very good thing!

    : )

I thought Hello Games was about 5 people strong, I had no idea they were capable of this. It's a pleasant surprise though :)

Well, given that 'this' thus far is a procedural generation and rendering demo with no apparent gameplay I don't think it's out of the realms of belief that a few bods could put it together.

It's the remaining 85% of the work that might be tough.

Did anyone else notice the hole being blown in the asteroid before the ship flies through it? Whiffs of voxel tech, so I expect Vizzini to run in here (naked) any second...

Even if this doesn't turn out as good as it looks, I'm really pleased they are actually giving it a go!

    Christ, that looks beautiful.

Seems to carry the spirit of Elite, the exploration.

It looks fantastic and I don't even like spacey-flight-sim type games. Procedural generation bores the tits off me though, so I hope they have some more tricks up their sleeves though.

What do people not like procedural generation?

Lack of real design for me. The randomness means that really exciting things rarely happen. I prefer a scripted thrill ride to the majority of procedurally generated games I've played. Granted, when everything falls into place and something awesome happens in a procedural game, it feels more impressive than scripting, but such natural thrills are usually sparse.

It kind of reminds me of Elite but also Mercenary and Hunter.

Agreed. For the purple trees example, trees are one of the most common things to procedurally generate, as there are so many parameters you can change - colour, branch rate, angles, but fundamentally it still ends up looking like a tree, albeit one viewed through a crazy art filter. Thinking procedurally often helps people create new stuff - thinking like what if horses had six legs and the likes, but they can disregard stuff like a horse with a long kneck, as that's just a giraffe. Procedural code can make none of those value judgements, and anyway is limited by the imagination of the developer setting the parameters to vary.

Yeah, Hunter especially would be a great touchstone for something like this.

Well I guess it depends on how long they've been working on it, I guess I was assuming it wasn't that long but Joe Danger 2 came out a year ago so I guess it might be long enough. There's still a lot of systems at work there and a decent number of assets that would have been created manually but yeah it's still possible of course I just didn't see it coming from a team like that.

It is a little out of leftfield for sure. But then when they left the comfort of the big boys they did state they wanted to make the sort of games that they wanted to play.

Living the dream - I'm impressed and jealous! Really hope they pull off something special with this.

I hope it's as good as it looks it could be. I just hope it doesn't get stuck into development hell or become a bug filled mess.
