@neilka Yeah, I know there was a reveal in Season 1 about how Saul got his name, but that wasn't my point. The fact is half way through Season 3 and we still haven't got the Saul Goodman character we know from Breaking Bad. And that is probably what's putting a lot of people off who tuned in thinking they'd be seeing him handling different cases from week to week, in his trademark style.

Personally I love the show just how it is, but in the last few episodes I've been getting a nagging feeling that maybe they've been dragging out this origin story a bit too long. I want it to hurry along to the point where we get to see Saul being Saul in his own dodgy legal practice, dodging and weaving and knocking out wise-cracks.

1/3rd of the way though Season 3 of Better Call Saul and we still don't have a character called Saul in it. Even though each episode is close to being as masterfully constructed as Breaking Bad, this has to be the reason why ratings have been taking a plunge. The show simply doesn't live up to its name even nearly half way through Season 3.

Chuck is a cunt. I love Spinal Tap but I can't forgive what he's doing to Jimmy

What makes you think its losing viewers. The season 2 finale was in keeping with the rest of the series and in the top 10 shows on cable in the states. I dont think netflix gives viewing figures for their shows.

    @specialgamer

A "and this week Saul's case is..." series would not work for me, I'm glad the they haven't steered it in that direction.

Besides, Jimmy has always been Saul Goodman, he just hasn't adopted that name yet.

I think once Jimmy goes full Goodman, it's over. You can't have him turn his back on Chuck forever, lose Kim, set up his dodgy lawyer's office and then fill a few more episodes with Saul being Saul. So of course they're dragging it out towards that natural conclusion of the show.

I'm enjoying the slow tease, watching it all unravel. It's fairly unique in this respect. Sure, some shows set things up with a quick glimpse of where a character ends up but here we have his future really well fleshed out in our heads.
It's fascinating to see how they back pedalled and picked through the various strands to work out how they were going to build to it.

Yeah, when he becomes Saul fully, that's the end of the show surely. We know what he does then. This is about his life before Saul, as he becomes Saul.

Amazing episode I thought. Felt very Breaking Bad for the first half hour.

Yeah at some point I thought 'well so far it feels like a breaking bad episode' and noticed half the episode had already passed.

Someone did mention a page (or two) back that they were afraid GUs' return would split the show in two. It does feel a bit that way. Hector, Gus, Mike, the Cartel. IT could all have been part of a BB episode. Then it switches back to Jimmy/Chuck/Kim/...

Still enjoying this immensely though. :-)

Yeah, that was me. While I loved the Fring scenes here, it did feel a bit weird not seeing the title character of this show until like halfway through the episode.

Heh, I totally thought of you Mola when watching this episode. Fring does seem to have split the show as you thought he might.

I really like it though, although I don't want the focus to be too much in Fring at the expense of Jimmy.

Yeah, definitely feels like BB episode. I guess at heart they are both about the downfall of decent men who nurture their darkness so why not have the darkest character from BB figure heavily.

I bloody love Fring as well.

The problem is that Fring is such a menacing character (the actor who plays him is fantastic at that), he pulls everything else into his gravitational orbit and kind of overwhelms any episode he's in. For me, at least.

So I'm kind of torn. Much as I like Fring and Mike, I didn't really start watching this show because I wanted (or needed) to know their backstories. I'm here for Jimmy, and I want the focus to be on him.

That's fair enough, however to tell Jimmy's story Fring was always going to have to figure.

Eh, not really. They do know each other in BB, but it's not implied that they have a close relationship or anything. Mike is the thing they have most in common.

Do we still think the intern is related?

I was trying to remember the other day if Fring and Saul even knew each other. I know that it's Saul who brings Mike in to help Jesse clean up but wasn't sure beyond that.

I think Saul's original words about Fring in BB were "I know a guy (Mike) who knows a guy (Fring)". Which to me implies a relationship, but not a close one.

While Saul and Fring may not be closely related, it is the work that Mike will do for Fring that makes Mike the person that Saul eventually knows, and what he is capable of.

Think the aging thing was a bit more distracting with Gus than it was with Mike, as Gus looked pretty tight in Breaking Bad, but now looks old and baggy as fuck.

    BB Fring

    BCS Fring

He looks pretty much the same to me :D

I kept noticing his big belly last night. Was he always so plump in the midsection?

He really deserved that. That ending is just crying out for a Phoenix Wright-style court breakdown sequence.

Also, HUELL IS BACK BABY. I missed that egg-head so much.

Cracking episode. I love a bit of courtroom drama. Anyone concerned Jimmy would continue taking a back seat to Mike and Gus after last week should be thoroughly pleased.

Okay lets just enjoy this brief interlude before the shitbag comes up with another way to do what Chuck does...or makes Jimmy do what Jimmy does.
