VG247 and Nintendolife are reporting that NIS America has had this rated for Germany

Hopefully that means we'll see it next year!

For the uninitiated, it's a remake of the original Etrian Odyssey, with an updated art style from EOIV. You can choose to play the original game, in which you make your custom party, or play the story mode, with set characters, (one is a new class, and one a class from EOII) cut scenes and extra areas to explore. There's also an easier mode, like EOIV, to help new explorers along, and the skill trees have been revised.

The first floor of EO put me off the first time I played it, and it took me a year to go back to it. Now it's my favourite new IP of last gen after dungeoneering my way through all four games, so anything that gives options for new players sounds good to me. Although that first experience gave me a lesson in caution that has served me well :D

    S'good.

I'm getting used to the weirdness of having story constantly getting thrown at me now. :p

Any ideas when Europe might see the demo? I've not seen any dates.

So, May 2nd release date in the EU. Can't wait to play it with the new party!

Is this the one where you can choose the game auto-map for you? I.e. you don't have to do it manually.
    - Guard frowns at you saying: "No, this map is not yet complete. Return to me when it is."
    Grrr!

It has an automap setting which does walls, but it's not totally comprehensive. You still need to mark spaces between doors, damage floors, water, treasure and other points of interest. You'll still need the stylus out on new floors but it isn't as bad. The biggest change for me was the increased speed of movement and auto battle.

Can ANY of EO games do complete automapping for you (incl. the DS ones)? I thought I'd ask while you're here, I believe you might know.
I know it sounds strange as it's one of the series' selling points, but I hate manual mapping.

I'm pretty certain that none of them do. Maybe try something like Demon Gaze instead, if you really hate manual mapping but want a dungeon crawler.

Millennium Girl is the closest to full auto. I do think Demon Gaze is the better game overall, but the new party in Etrian is really fun to play around with.

It's been a long time since I played the first one, so I'm really looking forward to this. I wonder if I'll find the lack of subclassing a bit simple these days?

Ah well, at least I found the modicum of story that turns up near the end of EO1 to be the best in the series.

EO4 records where you have walked only. Walls, warps, points of interest are all down to the player.

Not played too much of it though; been busy with Rune Factory 4. That's due out here soon though too, surely. OH WAIT! It was cancelled wasn't it!

@uiruki I like it! Removes some of the niggles I had with previous versions - you can save anytime you like, not just to end a day for example. Story is typically naff but it's the farming/RPG cross over gameplay that I love :-)

I've been having some trouble downloading the demo- it's listed as taking up zero blocks and understandably then crashes during download, could a kind EGer have a look at it on the eshop and let me know if it's just me? Cheers fellas.

Ah, thanks, it's worked ok for me now too, maybe it was just having teething issues last night.

Loving the new characters, I can see a lot of interesting combos across the classes, and more healing abilities across the non-medic classes, and lots of support abilities that seem a bit more interesting/useful. They've really looked at the skill system and brought it more into line with the more recent games.

Standard difficulty feels much easier than the first game due to greater spread of healing across classes.

Big spoiler for anyone who didn't play EO1-
It seems odd that they've put the futuristic technology right at the start, I was go smacked by the final strata being working my down through a skyscraper in the first game

The bigger surprise for me wasn't the technology, but that it was Shinjuku.

I've had a passing interest in Etrian Odyssey for a while, but never played one. I gave the EOIV demo a bash a few months back, and while I enjoyed it, I did feel a little out of my depth. Do the EO vets think this game might be a better 'in' to the series?

Not really i wouldn't say as they've redone the first game in the way that makes it a Lil non-etrian odyssey like...id say 4 is more representative of what the series is like..
