R-Types, Destruction Derby 2, Hi-Octane (which was, obvious to any sane person, always better than Wipeout).

And while we're at it, Castlevania Symphonies is nice, but no match for Castlevania IV on SNES.

    Final Fantasy games
    Front mission 3
    Syphon Filter games
Spec-Ops(brilliant and my favorite 3rd person shooters)
    Rayman
    Tony Hawk 2
Breath of Fire IV(III has insane slow text speed that made me want to hurl my controler at the screen)

    Ace Combat 2 and 3
    Croc: Legend of Gobbo's

Most of them still play fine once you get past the graphics.

I can't prove it with science, but I think Destruction Derby might be the greatest stock car racing game ever made. But not the first one, the one with big hills/jumps.

And Wipeout (1) is of course the only game in that franchise that mattered. Damn that was a golden age of gamage (Do You See).

Ye that's it, but I think it was twisted metal 2. It was awesome, I can remember all sorts of cool weapons. I'll have to watch some you tube gameplay. Dunno if it would play good nowadays mind.
Well there is a PS3 version.

T-Rex Sim on demo1. Oh and Overboard, that was a great little game. Parasite Eve 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Rival Schools and Legacy Of Kain are good ones too.

I still play the puzzler Kurushi (IQ+ in japan IIRC) on my Vita. Cracking game, simple graphics so not looking dated. Nothing out there even similar. Great game.

Crash 3 (Warped) is still a magnificent game.

FF Tactics and Front Mission 3 are great strategy games and work nicely on Vita even though I always find myself wanting to use the touch screen to control them.

For me, Flatout: Ultimate Carnage beat it in every conceivable way.

It's a shame that DD is a dead franchise though, it had the potential to be great but imo it never really achieved that potential.

Can't believe noone else has mentioned Devil Dice.

Don't think I've seen Vib Ribbon or Kula World mentioned either.

Castlevania Chronicles is superb and probably my favourite version, better than 4 even.

Fear Effect is also a great resi type cyberpunk game, and the graphics are great, it used static backgrounds similar to resi but parts were FMVideo looping,if the same technique were applied to todays games it would look great.

Someone did mention Devil Dice earlier and I was going to commend them (but couldn't be arsed on phone). It was excellent. Could just play it for hours on end without really thinking about it. Excellent for a teenager with a lonely heart *sob* (same went for Gran Turismo 2).

The Fear Effect games were brilliant and a really unique experience. However they were an absolute pain to get working. The amount of times I had to reload saves because of crashes/freezes. Don't think the technology could keep up. Particularly with scratched to fuck rental discs. Also it might be the first games to prominently feature lipstick lesbians, which was nice.

Any Hogs Of War fans here? For those who don't recognise it, it's like a 3D version of Worms but with pigs in a WW1 setting and Rik Mayall's voice!

I was playing HoW again a few months ago on my PS3, a bit ropey now obviously, but still a great laugh! I'd love to see a sequel!

Vib Ribbon was expensive partially because it was ridiculously hard to emulate. It's pretty much sorted now, though.

    @meme

Why was it hard to emulate? It's not exactly unique in games procedurally generating levels based on music. A direct emulation would be hard, but I can't think of a reason an updated re-release using MP3s instead of reading a physical CD wouldn't be possible.

Genuine question, never heard that claimed before so would be interested to know what it's based on.

It was pretty unique, actually. It loaded the entire game into RAM (which is why you could use your own music CD). That's where the problem was - syncing the game running in RAM to the audio from an emulated CD drive. Something to do with the timing was off, so the level wouldn't even load. And even when it did load, the timing was linked to the display so if you had a different refresh rate set or vsync or anything like that it would just crash outright.

Like I said, it's fixed now, but it took a hell of a long time, massively driving up the demand for the physical game.
