    So, Steam Trading Cards.

    1. What are they?

    2. How do we get them?

    3. Why should we trade them?

For answers to all of these questions, please read the posts below this one, as I have no clue beyond the fact that an Engi Cruiser Trading Card just appeared in my inventory.

I remember joining the beta, and I seem to have a Stealth Cruiser card from FTL. That's all I know.

Is there any point to the XP beyond granting badges ?
Any point to the badges or are they to Steam itself what hats are to TF2 ?
And another question : are card drops completely random or are they linked to Steam achievements or other specific in-game events ?

I don't really get this, do I have to play all of these games again to get the cards, because it is telling me I have none.

If you're bothered, it might be worth loading the games up just to see if the achievements pop the trading cards into your inventory..?

Dammit, I've spent the last half-hour diddling on the Steamy stuff. EVENT! \o/

The drops are time-based. Or at least they were in the beta. People just opened up the game and left it idling on the menu for a few hours to come back and discover cards had dropped.
  • Deleted user 28 June 2013 17:02:54
Yep, still timebased in the full thing. Just tested it by leaving Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac idling on the menu, left it running, when I came back I had a couple of new cards.

I found it took in Portal 2 till the old Aperture labs to get all the card drops and till the end of the boat section (Christ that goes on forever) to get the ones in Half Life 2.

Bleh, thanks for the info but that is balls stupid. The reason I have all of these game sin my inventory is because I've sodding played them. It's not as if Steam doesn't know this either.

Don't you have a Gamersgate account?

I've been checking their site far less often since I got all the achievements and then hit the level cap. :( No end-game content.

Regular cards are around 20p, but foil cards (which you get sometimes instead of regular cards) go for a couple of quid. Booster packs (which you are just randomly given sometimes) can go for a fiver.

What, create a thread, and then expect us to do all the work?

That's not what I pay my Eurogamer subscription for....what do you mean you don't pay a subscription!!

So, what?! I should install and start AND leave my games to idle if I would like to have some of these cards?!?

    Not gonna happen.

If anyone has a spare 3DS code for the free promotion thingy (other than AC:NL or Fire Emblem) I'll give them 4 cards if they want.

It's kind of weird. You'd think they'd tie it to achievements or something (especially given almost every game has them nowadays), but it's literally just playtime based. Leave the game idle, exhaust your drops and trade/sell duplicates and that's about it.

I'm not getting this either. If I'm not mistaken you only get 4 cards per game. Once you reach that limit you're not getting more. Where is the trading in that.
  • Deleted user 28 June 2013 20:13:07
Odd that they don't mention a thing about these cards on the main Steam page.

If I get all the cards for a game and sell the lot, can I get all those cards again just by playing the game?

I got my first card for Serious Sam 3. I think I can get 20p for it. Might buy Black Ops 2!

You can get duplicates, or trade one different set for another, or sell duplicates and buy other cards with the profit. Then once you've used up all the drops you get random booster packs dropped on rare occasions.

Hopefully as this develops it will be tied more to achievements, or at least more to in-game events. Such and such a card will only drop in Ravenholm if x and y blah blah. Most should be attainable in due course, some with reasonable amount of derring-do, and one or two very rare/difficult to achieve.

...surely that's just common sense for a TCG, right?

Not really, TCGs are based around randomness. There are generally rules about how many of each rarity you get in a booster, but them being random is very much at the core of what TCGs are. Then you do the T part of TCG and trade them :)

I do sort of want all the FTL cards. I might play a bit Super Meat Boy and see if I can trade those for the FTL ones.
