E3 2013: DRM-free PS4 is a PR play – expect similar policies across both consoles, say sources

Several development sources have told us that they expect game publishers to implement similar DRM policies across Xbox One and PS4, despite what has unfolded at E3 this week.

Our contacts described Sony’s conference announcements as a PR play, and revealed that its decision to go DRM-free was made at the very last minute.

Each platform holder’s DRM policy has changed continually over the last few months, they said, though Microsoft’s initial stance was much tougher than its position today. This suggests that the platform holder’s decision to let publishers decide for themselves whether to implement DRM on Xbox One was not part of the original plan.

Ultimately, the developers we spoke to understand the need to protect the revenues made on their work, and expect to see broadly similar DRM restrictions across both PS4 and Xbox One – in one instance, it was suggested that these measures were essential for the console business to survive.

We were also told that final publishing agreements will not be drawn up for at least another month, so the terms of engagement could yet change once more before each console launches at the end of the year.
    Time will tell...

That'd be Edge's contacts at Microsoft then.

Oh Edge, you were wrong, Sony, and now EA and others, have done something that doesn't fit with your digital overlord future for videogames and blindsided you, so now you have to try make it look like you were not wrong after all.

I'm confused, XBone leaves to the pubs? I thought all games on there had drm; hence the 24 hour check up and licence malarky.

The difference is Sony explained it clearly.
We know it will be different on downloaded games, we know publishers can still do drm like online passes (though EA say they probably won't.).

The difference is that we own our disc games and can play offline.

You'd have thought with news like this, that this would have already been discussed at great lengths- to the point where it had already got boring.

    Clearly not though!

Also. This is largely because MS have retreated, not Sony getting harsher.

Can we merge this with the next gen coming thread, mods?

Anyway, it's what I expected. EA are being very evasive about their plans, saying online passes aren't part of it. I doubt the little F2P elements of ME3 and DS3 made enough to make that a viable alternative, so I get the feeling that maybe they have authentication servers and one-use codes. After all, isn't Sony's online decentralised? MS have Live traffic go through their servers with very few exceptions, whereas Sony's servers are just for specific processes.

Edge is still regarded as the best the gaming press has ever and will be, around the world. Of course people listen to them. It says a lot about how shit gaming mags are, really, that nobody has ever truly equalled or rivalled them.

@X201 agree with merging. But it's understandable given this is the most exciting thing to happen in console gaming for the large part of a decade.

Is "merging" even an option here? I thought all they ever did was lock threads and point to the already existing ones. Unless that is "merging" in which case "merging" could just as well be called "slicing up cucumbers", because it would have about as much to do with merging as cucumbers do.

The right decision at the last minute is better than the wrong decision.

We won't have Sony's actual decision until the PS4 launch. You know anything they say is about as reliable as a launch 360.

It's impossible to implement similar restrictions on the PS4. All Xbone games will be required to authenticate online to work at all, even in single player. Given that Sony have already confirmed that the PS4 can be used completely offline, the absolute most a publisher will be able to do is use an online pass. You can't just not have your game work at all on a system being heavily sold as never needing to connect to the internet. Sony wouldn't allow it.

The only way it could happen is if Sony are flat-out lying to everybody, and that would be suicide for them. They'd be crucified even worse than Microsoft when people found out the truth.

Of course the proof of the pudding is in the eating, but it would be pretty disastrous if Sony did a U-Turn after making so much of a big deal about it at E3.

On that basis I will say its very, very, VERY unlikely, especially with the region-free stuff on top. Microsoft have a history controlling who plays what, where, when and how. Sony have a good history in this regard, and I've seen no evidence to suggest that things will suddenly change on the PS4.

Edge don't know shit, listen to this: http://www.giantbomb.com/podcasts/sony-s-scott-rohde-answers-your-burning-ps4-questi/1600-504/

Sony's scott rhodes makes it clear:
    - Not allowing online passes, even for third parties, since PS+ is now required for online play.
    - $399 was a target price set many years ago
    - Camera is not included, costs $59
    - F2P online games/services won't require PS+ in general (but some games might)
    - Subscription based games/services won't require PS+
    - Laughed when asked about HOME on PS4, complimented it. (probably means its coming to PS4)

"Single player disc based games do not require online"

    Is still better than

    "All games require online"
