    Hey everyone! I am a games dev student and currently doing a research assignment into a chosen genre. I have chosen to research RPG's and could use your quality opinions into what makes a good RPG or a bad RPG. Please tell me what mechanics make a good game and any of your favorite RPG titles

    It's not about any particular mechanics but rather how well they are implemented in my opinion.

    If you want some good answers, then you need to put a little bit of effort into the asking. Otherwise you'll find the useful posts on here or anywhere else very few and far between :)

    A good RPG should be easy to use with as little training as possible by a single individual, have good armour penetration ability and be easy to carry and maintain. Reduced back blast and reduced launch signature are also desirable.

    @Commander Keen have you ever done market research? you rely on the knowledge and understanding of others in order to get anything... especially qualitative work.

    Hello!

    Are you on the same course as the person who made the Survival Horror research thread?

    As for your question, it depends on what sort of RPG it is, there is no one, correct answer. Random battles are generally considered bad these days, but they manage to sneak into games even now and some people even profess to like them. I would consider them least tolerable in games where you have to explore and search locations for knick knacks, there's something particularly enraging about running into two or three battles just crossing a room to get to a treasure chest.

    Linear, linear and linear. You will get an A+. Is this for your SATs?

    Mandatory grinding = bad. Optional grinding just to make yourself more powerful because being powerful is awesome = good. That's the key for me. I do like grinding to raise my level and get items/cash as long as I'm not forced into it by a difficulty spike.

    A plot twist where the big baddie turns out to be your twin brother, or similar can be fun. (Not really)

    Random battles are a scourge on gaming.
    Scaling enemy difficulty is a bit shit. Morrowind did it well, Oblivion and Skyrim not so well. imo.
