Brilliant Grantland retrospective of the Super Mario Bros. movie:

"Born of the worst intentions, Super Mario Bros. was the toxic product of greed, hubris, incompetence, and total condescension to the audience"

I read an interview with Bob Hoskins once that was basically him trashing the husband and wife who directed it. The upshot is that they were a pair of wankers who were totally out of their depth and actually got removed from the movie before it had wrapped.

Given how protective Nintendo generally are of the Mario franchise, I'm still surprised to this day that the movie was even allowed. There have been missteps of course, but nothing as misguided as 7 foot dinosaur man things instead of Goombas and Yoshi as a dinosaur you can't even use as a vehicle.

Still, who doesn't see Bowser and instantly think Dennis Hopper? So the casting is spot on, clearly.

This is the company that has turned every one of their properties into some shitty cartoon, up to and including turning simon belmonte into a corwardly mincer.

Nintendo protective of Mario?! They'd let wealthy Japanese businessmen rape his little pink bottom, if they thought they could make some money out of it.

When I say protective, I mean they like to wring cash out of him themselves lots. I can't see the licence fee they were paid to allow the use of their characters in the movie being more than if they'd commissioned some silly little cartoon themselves. I'm probably wrong though - for all I know they got LOADS OF MONEY, in which case it's certainly an understandable business decision.
