    Hello.

There's no way you got 90FPS on a P2 350 + Voodoo 3 at that res with everything turned on.
Duurrr. He'd converted the Quake engine to use voxels...silly rabbit.

I'm surprised he didn't spend the whole decade playing Blade Runner. 750k polygons running on a voxel engine with no 3d acceleration support... it's like Vizzini heaven.

Then it must have been using either a voodoo 5500 with the dual cpu P2 350s, or the dual cpu P3 800 workstation I had just after. Either way, Outcast needed a stupidly low resolution 512x384 to get close to today's console gaming frame-rates.

    Edit:
I was also hunking a lot of MBs from the 384mb or 768mb each system had ;)

I saw an XBox live indie game that claimed it used 2D Voxels...

    /facepalm

The Voxel name comes from Volume + Pixel although people generally abuse the word now to mean minecraft-like blocky style.

UE4 doesn't use voxels. Why the hell are we going on about voxels all the time?
About 0.1% of the features involve the use of voxels.

Incidentally so does the Crysis 1, 2 and 3 engines so clearly we're doomed.

    20 FPS?

Outcast needed a stupidly powerful PC for the time primarily because it was 100% running in software mode. It didn't touch any GPU hardware at all. There's an interview with the devs somewhere lamenting the fact that they couldn't use hardware acceleration in some way as it would have massively lowered the specs and probably stopped it being a complete commercial failure. In fact, quite a few critics at the time thought it was inferior to other games simply because hardware acceleration was the new in-thing, and the game not supporting it felt like a step backwards for technology. It taking about half a decade to make didn't help either.

All it really proves is that, speaking broadly, no-one gives much of a fuck about high-end graphics features. The industry will go where the money is, not where a small handful of enthusiasts making up a very minor percentage of the market want them to go.

    @graysonavich

Who said anything about FSAA on Quake3? That's a graphics driver override setting, nothing to do with the game's bells and whistles.

According to industry sources the Durango will be better at voxel based engines than the PS4.

Also, Vizzini is a sad pathetic, uninformed, delusional and sociopathic cunt.

There were also games that used a similar mechanic like Ballz

Remember Delta Force? Was quite fun back then, hasn't aged too well though. I liked how voxel graphics managed to display organic (non-polygon) terrain, even though it could be eye-straining.

I loved Delta Force. Even back then it looked like arse when you got up close to anything that wasn't a sloping hill. But it could generate far away terrain better than most games at the time.

It really was good, as this retrospective shows.

Can't we keep him? I like Vizzini, he's the village idiot of EG.

Why the need to call someone a cunt because you don't agree with his opinions on fucking game consoles on an internet forum.

While I agree with your basic point, a phrase involving glass houses and stones comes to mind.

By the time the future comes around, you'll be wanting to upgrade your mobo, CPU and summat else to whatever is the sweet spot standard of that time. No doubt some faster standard or such gubbins.

An update on this following digital foundry's article on the topic.

Apparently the 8 core AMD may be a better solution for CPU in the long run, and be sure to get as much Gddr5 ram with your graphics card as possible.
