DC Universe is a bit watered down compared to other MMOs. The hooks that takes over your whole life is mainly the social element as you feel loyalty to your guild as they cant progress with loot/bosses without you and so you feel like must raid all the time with your guild.
Its an odd feeling but can become dangerous as takes over everything to help your guild progress. Speaking from personal experience, althourgh still play MMOs it is not nearly the same level anymore.
Anyway to the topic at hand, perhaps little games and nothing like big AAA games. Perhaps get a Playstation Vita or the like so you can play proper games when out and about getting life back

I have no idea how someone can addicted to an MMO. They're just not that good, gameplaywise.
They can be in groups: i found WoW fun because i was performing a role that others relied upon, and ditto them.
