So, after all the speculation - will It be a sequel? Will it be a Prequel? - and following the Investor Call that confirmed a new Batman game would be coming this year, we now have an official announcement:

    Batman - Arkham Origins.

It's being developed by Warner Bros Montreal, rather than Rocksteady.

Described as being set several years prior to Arkham Asylum, and themed around Batman meeting many iconic characters for the first time. No additional information so far, other than the platforms (PC, PS3, WiiU and 360) along with confirmation that there will be a handheld spin-off called Arkham Origins Blackgate launched alongside in October this year.

No Rocksteady, so consider me apprehensive at this point.

Edit - further, considering how lukewarm consumers and reviewers alike were for the God and Gears of War prequels, is this yet another 'origin' story that frankly no-one wanted told?

The best bit of news is the 3DS/Vita spinoff

Blackgate, a 2.5D Metroid-style game, takes place after the events of Arkham Origins and is in development at Armature Studio, the company founded by several of the people behind the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

That actually sounds interesting, especially after the letdown of Mirrors of Fate. Been ages since we had a really good metroidvania game on handhelds.

Er...meh I think. Kind of done with the whole Arkham thing. Didn't like City as much as Asylum for starters.

Someone make a good Superman game please. Flying is fun.

I just CBA with Arkham City. It was a bit rudderless and some of the mechanics were a bit off.

It just wasnt fun being told to go somewhere and then having to spend 10 minutes looking for a door.

A superman game would be really difficult to get right I think. Mainly due to the scale that it would need to make you actually feel like superman.

I'd like to see this go to a more controlled, linear approach - the open world stuff was what spoiled City imo.

I saw an idea once for a Superman game based on him losing his powers at the beginning, and you gradually getting them back as the game progresses, until you finally end up with the ability to throw buildings into the sun etc.

Could be balanced out with Clark Kent elements - stealth, detectivy stuff etc.

    Anyway, more Batman games. Bleh.

I enjoyed Arkham City, though not as much as Asylum. If this is going to be more of the same I'm not sure I can be bothered.

I didn't really have any problems finding doors. Maybe the door thing is your thing?

It felt like it. Thats how fun continually having to find the entrance to hideouts is.

It'll be some new engine they're using that'll allow for some new gameplay technique that the whole game will simply be a showcase for and all story elements built around. Like most other games.

    yawn.

It shall be pedestrian at best. I'm sure it will involve some kind of combat system, and it will have levels based around super villains. I can almost feel a scoff coming on as I speak.

    Snooze

Maybe Organic Orange could be a new supervillian? I mean let's face it; it wouldn't be any more silly than some if his enemies like Calendar Man or Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.

I hope they focus on one main villain, in an interesting location rather then trying to stuff as much in as possible

My biggest problem with Arkham City was that it sacrificed tight design and focus for breadth, and became an exercise in shoe-horning in as many cameos from as many villains and supporting cast as possible to the point it reached almost farcical levels.

I would hope for a return to a tighter, smaller experience but the theme of basing the new game around Batman's early days and presenting his first meeting with many iconic characters makes me think more that they're taking the direction of Arkham City and running with it even further.

I second the call for a good Superman game, but I do think that playing Superman would be akin to playing a game with God Mode turned on by default.

They're using the same engine as Arkham City (a tweaked version of Unreal 3)

I love both Arkham games. Asylum more than City, but I went back to get all the Riddler trophies and it's incredibly compelling. Something about them, they're part of the few games I've went out of my way to collect everything in.

Fact it's not Rocksteady is a bit worrying, what else have the new studio done? Also prequels aren't that exciting generally. Handheld stuff sounds great though.

Kinda worried that this being set in Gotham city, it will end up being a Grand Theft Auto: Batman Edition.

Assassin's Creed 3 and Far Cry 3 are the more recent ones. They're making Watch Dogs as well it seems.

The premise of meeting villains for the first time sounds a bit dull to be honest, especially when most of it is well worn ground in the comics and movies.

I was kinda hoping for something of a palette cleanser before the next 'proper' Arkham game. Maybe a low key LA Noire style adventure? Ho hum, I won't write it off before hand though as I can't see WB wanting to screw up their monster seller.

Bah, silly me. If the Wii U version of Arkham City is all they have under their belt, then I'm a bit worried.
