I think you need to man up a bit and kick some Great Jaggi arse. ;)
Once you've done that a few more times you can forge something decent and realise it was all worth it.

I finally gave in and picked up a Wii U a couple of weeks ago. Got a copy of Monster Hunter for Father's Day which was a pleasant surprise so would be keen for a couple of online hunts. I'm no expert but used to play a bit of MH Tri a few years ago with Cid and Red Crayon (although I was never in their league). I haven't been online yet with the Wii U version, does it use the Nintendo ID for finding players?

    @jystyn

You need to add a player to your friends list on WiiU then in game go to the cat at the docks for online menu, It will then tell you which friends you have online to join/create a room & invite to.

Long sword is my current favourite - once you've got it powered up after a few normal hits, you can cycle R/X/A over and over again seemingly endlessly.

(and having one of the little fellas taking some of the monster attention really helps)

I'd join you, but I wouldn't make good conversation. My girlfriend is a jeweller and her workspace happens to be our front room, so you'd be subjected to ear-ear-piercing noises for the entire duration. :/

I've just made a room. It's called Jive Jaunt. I'm assuming it's fairly easy to join?

Crap. Sorry, I never came back online to check for a response! I'm really sorry mate! Just spend the last few hours on Lego City.

For what it's worth, i'm free early next week, so if you're looking to play online again, i'll come join you.

Enjoy this so far, I've only just realised you fast travel back to the Village instead of running back through all the areas after completing and objective. :D

Yay! My missus did indeed get me a copy on 3DS for my birthday. And as an added bonus, she got me a Circle Pad Pro. Was on my wishlist but I wasn't expecting her to get it.

I need to knuckle down with this. I've set myself a target of having played more MH than Animal Crossing by the end of the year ;-)

I still need to finish Monster Hunter. At least the offline stuff. It's been great fun, but i've been distracted by my 3DS again. It's the perfect game to dip in and out of though. No heavy plot to remember and so no pressure to play it all over a short period of time.

I got my circle pad pro for my xl today (its massive) and gave this another shot. I finally got the opportunity to take down a big monster. This game is so slow to begin with but that fight was great fun. I still have no idea what is going on in the game though, for such a slow start it doesn't explain things very well!

What is a 'day' on a moga forecast? Is it just one trip to the forest or do I literally have to wait until tomorrow for the next days forecast?

One day is as long as you spend in Moga Woods, as long as you spend more than 2 minutes there. Quite random, I know, but if you keep talking to that guy on the big box, he'll eventually tell you this.

OK cool, I probably skipped that bit of text or just didn't take it in. So much info is given to you at the start its quite difficult to remember it all.

That's for true! Don't worry about it though. I remember feeling like I was being bombarded with information at the beginning, but it's the sort of information that gets repeated over and over again. Don't worry about trying to remember it all. You'll either figure these things out for yourself as you progress, or you'll have read those same tips from villagers a hundred times already.

Thanks for that! I got overwhelmed by the amount of info at the start that I put it aside in order to finish Fire Emblem first. If this is indeed a dip-in-and-out type of game I'm going to give it a go before that happens :)

I'm coming to the end of the 1* village quests. Feels like I've slipped back into the game pretty smoothly.
I'm making a point of trying other weapons - when I played on the Wii I stuck with S&S, a little bit of Hammer and then Lance for almost the entire game. So far I have tried Switch Axe, Gunlance, Hunting Horn and Great Sword. About to try Long Sword. Not sure which I really prefer at the moment. Intrigued by Gunlance and Horn...

Circle Pad Pro is great, although it does make the 3DS a littel heavy for my limp-wristed play style. ;)

I went through a very short phase of weapon experimentation, but i've found it's a rather expensive practice further on in the game. I use both the Long Sword and the Bow, which both require upgrading and both have their own armour sets.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the costs to upgrade. That makes me try to remember the ways to make money. Trading with the Argosy captain can help there I think...?

im a big fan of the switchaxe, it might be slow but what other weapon gives you the ability to shout SHITCHAXXXXXXXXXE every time you flick between axe and electric sword :)

I figure that I need to keep my hand in with either hammer or horn so that I have a bludgeon weapon for breaking things like Barroth heads.
Plus a bladed weapon for cutting tails etc.

I won't be hunting online so I need to do it all myself. Reckon I'll need to pay more attention to using traps to immobilise monsters for a bit in order to lay down the smack. Plus bombs maybe. Didn't explore them too much in Tri - I let Cid do most of the work. ;)

You can break 2 or 3 bits on most monsters. E.g. for Great Jaggi it's the head frills and the tail, 'Peco it's the beak, the wing flints and maybe the tail.

On Barroth and I think one or two others, you can only break the head with impact weapons, not blades.

Thanks for that! Something else to play around with. I'm not used to hunting with more than one other person and we usually play with a blade and bow combination.

You deffo want to break the breakable bits - you get better carves. And it can be the only way to get items required for armour or weapon upgrades. Gobul Lantern is another example.
Generally go for the head, wings and tail. Sometimes you almost have to pause and take a second look to notice that you've broken/chopped a bit. The wings will have holes in them, 'Peco's beak will be cracked, etc.
