I give it a week till everyone gets bored of it. Still it's a country mile better than the previous dance-based meme.

Is there a reason it's taken off now? Unless I'm mistaken the song's about a year old.

Maybe it was the same for Gangnam Style too, dunno.

Wretched thing about it, is that you'll pretty soon have a Radio 1 version, a BBC F1 version, a Top Gear version etc etc. And I'll hate it.

This post is unsuitable for those with a high rumour-sensitivity.

I'm somewhat glad that I have no idea at all what this is about, nor do I have any urge to.

Pointless side debate - is the word "meme" now synonymous with "fad" (as in, they appear, are popular for a bit, then fuck off and are rarely ever heard of again), or is it just misused and overapplied?

The also did it at the end of the last episode of the Last Leg on Channel 4. It was the funniest thing on the programme, though that's really not saying much.

Yeah what the hell is it about? I did find Ryu's breakdancing and Bowser's spazz attack in this amusing though.

Girl, you thought he was a man, but he was a muffin.

If the general consensus is yes, can we get you renamed to 'fad'?

Didn't it always (or, at least since you switched to that moniker)? Only difference is, a meme is guaranteed to make absolutely no sense if you don't already know it.

I only came across the Harlem Shake a couple of days ago, via the Youtube front page, and it was mildly amusing from the off. So I'd say it's more of a fad than a meme by my definition.

So this 'fad' is a video of someone dancing alone in a crowded room and then suddenly everyone starts dancing as soon as the music gets even more obnoxious...?

    Oh ok. I see. Cool?

It also seems to need the first person dancing with a mask on, and there are a few 'types' in the main. Dance

The original was brilliant, but now, now I don't even smirk at any of the imitators. Most of the videos don't even do the right dance that made the original so funny.

I don't get it. It's some people in costumes flailing at random. At least Gangnam style had some creativity and a vague hint of choreography.

    See also; viral and epic.

Misuse of viral annoys me more than lose/loose/loss. Facebook generation seem to have adopted it as "something popular".

I like it. Still got legs on it if someone choreographs a good one. I saw a good one with a family in the kitchen. There was a little girl in the corner punching her doll, and toddler waving from the top of their (enormous American) fridge. Made me laugh.

I think the best one I saw is the Norwegian army one. The guy in the sleeping bag.
