Registered 2 years agoThree episodes into the Yank version and it just isn't drawing me in - not sure why but I do find most of the characters (escept Spacey's and the reporter) unlikeable and dull. Or is that the point?
I'll keep at it .......... maybe I'll start to like it eventually. -

Registered 6 years agoWatched the first episode of this last night, as a brit not massively interested in US politics but thought it was quite good and kept me watching so gonna get into it. Spacey, as always, is just great to watch and I love his little chats with the camera in this (I worked with a yank who shared a flat with him many years ago, apparently he is a genuine really nice bloke).
Didn't know it was a remake of a British series before coming in here though so might check out the brit version to. -

Registered 6 years agoOh please do. Ian Richardson is magnificent in the role. You'll love his lovely twinkly eye and amused grin as he tells viewers how his sneaky, underhanded schemes are doing. Even though the character is a cold-blooded, ambitious monster. This post is unsuitable for those with a high rumour-sensitivity.

Registered 6 years agoFinished episode 7 tonight and really enjoying it so far but I still have little idea how this "house of cards" is fitting together but then I guess that's the whole point. Obviously by this time it's clear the education bill victory got him Russo but no idea where that is going.
Despite the slight confusion as to what the hell is going on and why it's going on the characters are helping me stick with it though, some very interesting characters and good performances so I can see why it was getting praise. Top stuff, makes me want some ribs to.
Bremancht I'll definitely check out the UK one, do you think it's best to wait and finish the US one first? I notice you said it was a different story on the previous page but will it spoiler or ruin anything for me by watching a bit of both? -

I've not watched the US one yet! I've a bit longer to go on Lovefilm before I can cancel it and try Netflix.

Based on what I'd read, the story in the US version is different. How different, I don't know - hopefully someone who's seen both can answer that.
Either way, you've started the US one, so you may as well finish it!This post is unsuitable for those with a high rumour-sensitivity.

I gave up about half way through episode 9 - I just couldn't get into the poorly written plot or the poorly written characters. Still, I tried ..........

Registered 9 years agoJust started watching. I've got the original BBC trilogy series on DVD. If you've not seen it, it truly is exceptional.
Now, back to watching this one... -

It gets worse, there's a scene were he is sitting all thoughtful....in front of a large TV with PS3 start up screen going
Kinda ruins things when product placement is that bad but they need to earn I guess.

One episode left. Boy, have things ratcheted up in tension over the past few episodes!

Registered 6 years agoStarted this recently. I'm enjoying it, but it's not quite as sharp as I was expecting. Then again, The Wire didn't grab me by the throat to begin with either. I think the UK version was relatively short, so it developed faster and felt punchier. Urqhart seemed lethal - his plan was made clear and developed from the start, whereas Underwood seems laid-back and unhurried. Maybe it's the length of the series again. Or the southern thang.
Spacey is excellent. I love his accent. His wife's story is interesting. I do wonder where it's going. This post is unsuitable for those with a high rumour-sensitivity.

Registered 6 years agoAnother episode watched, and although I'm enjoying it, it is rather lacking in places.
It isn't as sharp, cynical or as biting as I had expected. I'm not a box-set guy but even for me the format of this series seems a little familiar, as if there are certain subjects which they simply had to cover in order to provide depth and background to Frank Underwood.
As a result, I'm seeing stuff I wouldn't have expected. Positive attributes. Hope, trust, friendship. Family values. Mundanity even.
Maybe I'm I'm remembering the original series a little too rosily, but it made it's mark quickly, kept up the pace and got to the point quickly.
Maybe it'll ramp up over the next couple of episodes. This post is unsuitable for those with a high rumour-sensitivity.

Registered 5 years agoSaw the first 2 episodes the other day. Kevin Spacey certainly doesn't disappoint. In fact the acting is top-notch all around. Not a fan of the 4th-wall breaking narration, though. Seems like a lazy device. -

Registered 8 years agoIt's pretty much what made House of Cards the programme it was, separating it from countless other political dramas. An extremely unlikable protagonist makes you root for him by drawing the viewer into his confidence.Quoted

Registered 5 years agoI'm not disputing its function or its effectiveness, it's just a personal preference. Except for the 'lazy device' part- that's an opinion. Admittedly a very debatable one
Wait, you say 'was'. Did it not get renewed for a second season?
Never mind, google says it did.

That's apparently a total of nine iPhones and iPads for two people.
I did like the series though, Spacey is just right for the role.

Spacey was good at the political side but he really struggled at any of the more human scenes. I didn't find his affair with that reporter in any way believable and some of the scenes were just plain creepy.
