I've got a i5 4670k with 16gb ram and a gtx760, when I had it in November it would run everything maxed out at 1080p but recently I've had to lower the settings for a few games. Wolfenstein was a bit of a resource hog but I managed to get it running smooth in the end. I kinda wished I'd hung on and just bought a PS4 at least I wouldn't have to piss about with settings. Looks like I'll have to get a new gpu next year because games are only going to get more complicated to run.

Watch Dogs is garbage on everything. I mean PCGamers Pxiel Collider can't even run it 60fps at 1080p.
Ubisoft games often seem to be a bit like that, at least to start with. Ass creed 3 particularly seemed very poorly optimised

Yeah totally, I'm pretty sure the game suffers from memory leaks as well which causes havoc.

Ubi just release unoptimised dogshit and fix it later, it's just the way they work. Sort of like EA, but French.

The game never went over 4.3GB of memory when I played it but perhaps that's the problem. Apparently the game is streaming in too much data from the hard drive, data that should have been loaded into RAM and fetched from that, not the bloody HD. :/

I mean for fucks sake even capping the frame rate to 30fps doesn't help on a AMD card because the card keeps throttling down into a lower power state. Things were turning into a slideshow until I went back to vsync 1 or frame 1 or whatever the fuck it's called then it was all smooth again (until you try driving around).

The only thing you can do about it is to stop buying games from shit publishers.

Apparently this 'agile' project management? Everyone's at it these days. Our it department say this is why are new software upgrade stuff doesn't work properly yet anyway

Just means they can get it out the door faster, if it works fine for 10%, they j'accuse everyone else of being the problem.

I take it it's a bad idea to replace my cooling system if I might upgrade to an as yet unreleased socket?

I'd say it depends both on the socket and cooler manufacturer. For instance Intel's LGA1155 and LGA1150 are compatible as far as the mounting is concerned - which was known before 1150 was released. Also, some manufacturers (Noctua IIRC) offer relatively low-cost new mounting kits to adapt their heat sinks to newer sockets.

It might be a bit of a gamble...

Nothing beats a Noctua NH-D14 for cooling to noise efficiency.
  • Deleted user 13 June 2014 21:34:21
Noctua don't do water cooling, I thought?

They don't. Why the need for water cooling?

There's water cooling and there's that pointless all-in-one water cooling that isn't any better than the best air coolers and is more of a pain in the arse to install. Just get a NH-D14 or if you want to get fancy shmancy the D15.

Interesting. They seemed to review better, and they don't get in the way of things like RAM the way a large heatsink can. I have the Prolimatech Megahalems just now. One of my RAM sticks is pushed slightly aside by it, but it doesn't appear to have done any REAL harm.

I'm at the stage where my 570GTX doesn't cut it anymore and the decision is to go PS4 or new GFX card. I may wait until there is enough games which warrant the change.

@MrWonderstuff I'd buy a new gfx card. Or in my case bought a ps4 in December, and got bored waiting for all the delayed games (some of which are now slated for Feb 15) so went out and bought a new PC, which is getting loads more use than my PS4 is at the moment!

The 570 isn't too bad, but there's certainly a fair amount of room for improvement with the currently available cards. I'm still deciding which card to get just now or whether to wait for the 800 series.

The Radeon 280x is just about the best value card at the moment but the drivers, man, the drivers. Nvidia cards are expensive for anything over 2GB so maybe wait and see what the 870 is like...

There's no solid information on when they are going to be released though.

    edit

I was bored so decided to give my old 580 a run out and the beast coped very well with Watch_Doggies but I had to turn the textures right down to the lowest setting. Profound sadness. :(

Old cards can still perform very well in games today, but the memory amount could be a limitation. My HD7850 for example, usually runs quite well, but as I only bought the 1GB model, I often have to set textures to medium. With the new consoles having upwards of 5GBs of shared memory, I'm afraid that anything less than 3GB of video memory could become a problem in the long run.

Of course, nobody says that you have to play the games at the highest textures setting. Frankly I have no intention to upgrade yet (if anything I might upgrade the CPU, since my i3-2100 is getting a little pushed nowadays).

I think it's Watch Dogs which has made me re-evaluate my gaming setup. I also have had to turn textures down to medium. Runs well with a few settings on high but I think the writing is on the wall for my 570. 4Gb video ram seems to be the concensus now.

I really wouldn't judge any setup on Ubisoft games. They just chuck out any old unoptimsed piss off shit these days.
