    So from Sky news

The new Star Wars films will be released every summer from 2015 to 2019, Disney has said.

Three new movies in the franchise will alternate with two standalone spin-off movies, set in the same universe as the series.

The spin-off films, lined up for 2016 and 2018, are are expected to either feature some of the lesser characters or explore the back story of the major ones.

Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back, is involved with the scripts.

No deal. They bought Marvel outright for $4.25bn.
I meant the naming deal for the rides really.

Universal have Harry Potter now where people are willing to queue 3hrs to buy an $80 wand so I doubt they are too bothered.

It wouldnt surprise me if there was a 'Star Wars Universe' with several sattelite movies floating around a central hub movie, same as the marvel one.

As I say, if anything can support that, its the Star Wars universe. Its why the prequels were so sad. You have this massive, massive canvass to paint on and Lucas thought in such small terms. All it really needs is a good team of creatives to create a roadmap that doesnt involve clones or anakin skywalker and youre golden.

Yeah that's kind of why I thought the Marvel rides may have been quietly retired in place of the Harry Potter stuff, or are the Marvel rides still there?

A quick glance at the Universal website suggests that they still have a Marvel 'land' at Islands of Adventure.

It seems like quite a complicated deal. Disney didn't even have their logo at the start of The Avengers if I remember correctly.

That could be more to do with Disney choosing to having a less visible brand presence with Marvel stuff. Not uncommon.

That would have made sense but according to Wiki it was part of the deal with paramount:

Also that October, The Walt Disney Company agreed to pay Paramount at least $115 million for the worldwide distribution rights to Iron Man 3 and The Avengers.[73] The deal also allowed Paramount to continue to collect the 8 percent box office fee it would have earned for distributing the film and a marquee credit placement of the company's logo on marketing materials. As a result, the onscreen production credit reads "Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures" though the film is solely owned, distributed and marketed by Disney. Paramount's Epix retained pay TV rights.[74]

They have always had fairly distinct film units. I dont think a touchstone film has ever referenced being part of disney.

I would rather the spin offs were about new characters that happen to be in the same universe.

They can even fight briefly in some of the main battles to give it more context. One of the problems of the prequels was they made the universe feel small, a film about Boba Fett is unlikely to be different.

And yet, take away the relevance to the core story and I cease to give a fuck. That was my big issue with all the KoTor stuff. I only really cared when it was paralleling the original story.

Conversely, thats why I liked it. The Jedi and Sith are really interesting as a concept and the galaxy as 'highly advanced shanty town' is pretty cool.

The basic building blocks of star wars are really cool, imho, so a spin off would be my preferred route, rather than to continue flogging the same storyline.

Yeah it does need a strong relevance without explaining backstory.

I can't see anyway of doing that and the best I can hope for are that the films are watchable fluff.

So long as there are TIE fighters aplenty, I wholeheartedly concur with this!

The noise of them flying alone would make me see the film.

The massive space battle in RotS was rubbish. Best space battle was a new hope, opening scene.

Yeah, it has to be done right. No shakey cam bollocks. I wanna see Wedge approaching the TIE fighter chasing Luke, etc.
