    EU wins nobel peace prize

No matter what you think of it and how flawed it still is I find it hard to disagree with the tremendous long term achievement of peace in Europe.

Now let's not screw it all up, kick Greece out of the Euro :)

    Come and get it cumslingers!

I think it is a good choice but the reasoning is odd considering it was created in 1992!

The peace prize is a joke.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

So the Cold War face off between NATO and the Soviet Bloc had nothing to do with keeping the peace then?

Oh and we'll ignore the nukes too, it's all down to the EU.

    This space left intentionally blank.

  • Deleted user 12 October 2012 14:22:30
I don't think anyone is saying it's all down to the eu. But they played a massive part and it is an incredible achievement. One that I can't think of a fair comparison to.

So the Nobel committee completely ignored what happened in the EU in the last 12 months before awarding the prize.

I guess it makes more sense than when they awarded it to Obama and his army of unmanned drones.

Good recipient. It's been a vital and major part of European cooperation and trade since its inception, which most likely has decreased the chance of conflicts. Counterfactuals are pretty silly for these things.

It is a joke. The EU joins previous winners...

Liu Xiaobo. Supported all wars against asia by white people. Because something something.

Al Gore. Al Fucking Gore. Fuck your environment, asshole.

Yasser Arafat. Nothing he did solved anything at all.

Obama. Being voted in - just like ten minutes ago. It was a slow year.

    Etc etc etc etc etc...

You say "etc etc etc etc", so please continue!

Controversies aside, the vast majority of people who get nominated actually have done some good in the world. But whatever. Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Medicines Sans Frontiers, fuck those guys!

Appreciate I'm in the minority here but I actually thinking managing to be elected as the first ever black president is worthy of the prize. But that didn't appear to be the stated reasons.

This is quite strange, agreeing with mowgli. I think I might delete this thread. It's wrong. :)

    What did Nelson Mandela do.

@Mola_Ram Desmond Tutu unquestionably deserves that accolade. And others as well, but don’t tell me it’s not cheapened by crap like this. Al Gore, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the EU in a list of peacemakers who include the likes of which Martin Luther King and Ghandi? It wasn’t a joke award – but it is now.

@mowgli Yeah that was an achievement. In America. For race politics. Not for “peace”.

    What did Nelson Mandela do.
Founded the ANC and funded a guerrilla war against the south africa apartheid government. No doubt he was fighting the good fight... but he was fighting. Ain't nothing to do with peace.

The journalists misheard him, it's actually the Wii U that's won the Nobel Peace Prize. Presumably for keeping ecosse off the streets.

@SClaw He was a terrorist plain and simple. Oh and Mother Theresa another winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, was a gun runner fact!
  • Deleted user 12 October 2012 17:28:26
@Tonka Too right. Who are they going to award it to next? Barry Chuckle?

Certainly helped to stop France and Germany going to war again.

It's done a bloody good job. 60 years of relative peace on the continent. When did that last happen?

But the prize is a joke. Has been since they gave it to Kissinger for ending a war he started,
