I'm getting a bit sick of my power consuming slab of a dell XPS laptop and these ultrabook things have taken my fancy.

Anyone any recommendations on good ones to look at ?

I use consoles for most gaming but would like to give guild wars 2 a blast on it, are they up to the job gfx wise ?

Don't mind spending a few quid for the right one.

    Thanks for any help :D

You can overclock the graphics card, but even without that GW2 should run fine.

Only question is do you mean to run off battery? These things dont last very long if you are gaming on the Nvidia card.

I can get 4hours or so playing football manager on the integrated card.

Also take a look at the gigabyte u2442 model available on amazon, that was my second choice.

First, that viao isn't an ultrabook and secondly, guildwars 2 doesn't support the graphics chip that most ultrabooks have.

I've only heard the term "Ultrabook" recently. How does one define a Ultrabook? Is it just a relatively powerful gaming laptop?

Its better than an ultrabook as it weighs only a tiny bit more but has a DVD drive, integrated graphics card and a full i5 / i7 dual core processor

but yes I suppose technically not an ultrabook by intel specifications

Nothing to do with gaming, I think its more it has to be a certain thinness, and offer a low voltage processor, boot up in a certain time and cost a certain amount.

    intel made it up

Intel may have created the definition, but it's an industry standard term.

@MrTomFTW No, they're more like macbook airs. Workable performance in a slim, portable package.

The only gaming I would bother using them for is the likes of Football Manager. If anything else happens to work then that's a bonus.

If you're serious about gaming you need to be looking at an sli Alienware or a dell xps.

Depends what you are after. Using one of those beasts on the sofa or in bed is a pain in the ass. Carrying it around is a pain in the ass

Using one of the ones I suggested will give you reasonable gaming, reasonable weight, reasonable heat etc.

But then the OP has disappeared so don't really know why he suggested he needed an ultrabook in the first place

If those things can really run 3d games at a reasonable frame rate, that's really cool.

There is the new Lenovo U410, it has a discrete NVidia card. Whether it will run GW2, I'm not sure. It'll run the first Guild Wars or WoW no problem though.

Cheers for the help all, been on baby duty all day so not been at pc to reply :)

I have an xps17 that is basically a desktop pc in laptop format, it's MASSIVE and isn't any good away from a charger, it also puts out a huge amount of heat.

I was thinking I could flog the xps and get something that would do 2 jobs in being very mobile and allow me to tinker with guild wars 2 in the evening.

I have always liked the look of the macbooks but really don't get on with apple products so these took my fancy, I noticed some were up to 1500 quid so thought they might be semi capable game wise but did have my doubts :)

I will take a look at the links and update if I do buy something :)

Just to hijack a minute. What would people expect of something like this?

    Intel Core i5-2450M
    6GB DDR3 System Memory
    Intel HD Graphics 3000

Wouldn't be expecting the earth or anything - if it could manage Starcraft 2 I'd be happy! Apparently the HD 3000 can cope with it at lower settings. Still, the EG hive mind is always worth consulting.

Yeah, it'll run, but it'll look like Startcraft 1.

That's fine, it wouldn't be a main computer or anything: just something to occupy me when travelling. If it can scrape a couple of games out then all the better.

Just pointing out that you may as well play the first one as 2 is a pale imitation.

    @Dirtbox

The patching and rebalancing has helped a lot since launch. It's not up to Brood War standards or anything but holds it's own pretty well. Not much in the way of alternatives at the moment anyway.

Though the potential issue of having to buy a second account so I can play in the US is something of a pisser. /sigh, Blizzard, you used to be cool, man. :(

It was 680 on there, then with some 100 cash-back promotion Samsung are doing at the moment. Will check out some models with the HD4000 and see what they come out at.
