Latest update made Cortana unworkable for me :(

I live in China but have all my region and language settings etc turned to US and it worked perfectly before but now all the news feed and weather etc is in Chinese (which I can't read) and the search function won't work.

Tried changing all the settings around and back again but there doesnt seem to be a way around it.

It's a shame because I used it quite a lot.

I remember reading somewhere that China and the UK were the next regions for Cortana. Something like a couple of weeks away.

Funny how China gets it before the rest of Europe, but guess makes sense from pure numbers point of view.

Since chineses is so precise with tones I think it might be a rather straight forward language to do voice recognition for.

    That and the market size.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

I think it would only work with Mandarin though which is only really spoken by a small portion of the population. It will be interesting to see how it works, my Chinese colleagues have told me that voice recognition apps developed by the Chinese for the Chinese rarely work well.

    Welp, I think my 930's a lemon.

I connected it to the mini-Bluetooth speaker a couple of weeks ago, and the volume started screwing up afterwards - it'd go down to zero of its own accord, and then start chasing back down if I put it back up. Also, the volume bar would stay at the top of the screen permanently, and pressing 'back' wouldn't clear it. Because the back key was always trying to clear it, this also meant that I couldn't use the back key for actually backing out through menus etc.

A reboot cleared it then, but it started happening again the other night, and a reboot sent it to the lightning bolt and gear screen. All attempts to soft-reset it sent it back there again. So I held camera/vol down/power until the screen flashed and managed to get it to boot. But the same problem still persists.

So I factory reset it, which I didn't want to do. I restored from a back-up: same problem. I wondered if it might have been the back-up that caused it to occur, so deleted my back-ups on OneDrive, created a new one from my 920, and then did it again (also worth pointing out that I have to do the three-button reset twice while it's factory resetting to get it to actually make it through the process). Again, problem still persists.

I'm guessing it's a dodgy OS install? So, before I contact Nokia and try and get a replacement (which they had damn well better now charge me for...), I'm thinking I'll try the Software Recovery Tool. I've never looked into it, so does anyone know: does it completely reinstall the OS, or will it just factory reset the phone again (which doesn't work)?

    Any advice appreciated.

Oh, and here's a video of what's happening, with bonus 8 out of 10 cats audio.

I had the developer version of the software and went back to the release version (before getting the official upgrade) using the Software Recovery Tool, so I'd say it re-installs the OS rather than a factory reset. But it might depend on it seeing your version of the software and thinking it's the latest.

That's a good point. I guess there's nothing to lose in giving it a go. Hopefully it'll actually work.

It's also mildly amusing (or would be, if it wasn't so annoying) that the preview version on my 920 is far more stable than the release version on my 930.

I think I'm going to forgo Nokia chat support, actually. They'll probably get me to send it in for repair, which means I'll be without a phone for days. I still have my 920, but even with an adaptor it won't recognise the nano sim.

I'll try and get into the EE shop in the next couple of days and see if they'll do a straight swap.

@Mageme Yeah, it's buggered :( And I don't even have my Yuna pic on there anymore as I've wiped the phone to take back. I probably won't get to the phone shop before the weekend, either.

I wonder what the odds are of them doing a straight swap...

Looks like a broken/defective digitiser from the video you posted, rather than a software problem

Nah, it's definitely a software issue. Touch response is fine, the problem is that the volume bar at the top refuses to leave the screen when I hit back, so it's always occupying the back button function, meaning I can't use it to back out of menus. This became a real PITA last night when I had just three texts to read - I'd have to open messaging, read one message, close messaging, open it again, read the next one, and then once more.

Also, the other problem is that I can't actually control the volume, and that when I try to restart the phone it refuses to do so.

Just been abroad with my Lumia 920. It performed so well. Holiday photos and videos are amazing and the offline sat-nav was superb. The offline mapping was brilliant as well. Cracking phone.

Is 8.1 not available in the UK yet then? I figured I should have it by now otherwise (I'm on sim-free)

You should have it, unless your manufacturer isn't sending it out yet. Does it say anything when you go to Settings, System, Phone Updates?

Says I don't have any updates available. I assume it's not tied to Virgin as I'm sim-free... HTC dragging their heels?

There's a recent story about HTC 8X and 8S firmware bug stopping the 8.1 roll-out on Google, but they're working on a fix.

When I received my Nokia 925 a few weeks ago and turned it on from new it found the 8.1 update straight away. It happily installed it and ran, I didn't set any fancy developer options.

This was just a new phone out of the box and was running 8.1 within minutes. The phone was bought direct from Amazon if that matters at all. So I can only assume your problems with updating are down to HTC.

    Cortana release date UK

Windows Phone 8.1 update Cortana assistantThe bad news for British owners is that the Microsoft has said a key feature, Cortana, won’t be coming to UK shores until “late 2014”, and timing might depend on when the assistant is promoted out of its current 'beta' phase.

However, Marcus Ash, Group Program Manager for Cortana, said on Twitter that "Making Cortana available in the UK and China will happen very soon. Weeks not months."

Ash has now tweeted (on 18 July) that "Barring an unforeseen issue, down to less than 2 weeks for the developer preview." adding that Cortana will have a British accent.

True to its word, Microsoft has now made Cortana available in Beta form. You can download the app from the store if you are a registered developer.

If you're not a developer, you can sign up for free here using the App Studio option. We have more information on how to become a developer here.
"Late 2014".... Any time until December 30th then? Sigh.

Oh for fuck's sake. Phone's working perfectly again and I can't replicate the issues. Which means I can't show them what it was doing in-store when I go to get it replaced. I can take my 920 and show them the video I made I guess, but I don't know if they'll go for it.

Yeah its the white portable one that came free.

Just held the button for 30 seconds and that might have fixed it. It appears to be charging.

Oh, my phone's fucked again, panic over. Went to take a shower, came back and the volume bar issue had re-occurred. Turned the phone off, then tried to turn it back on and now it's stuck in a boot loop, going to the Nokia screen, then a screen with an exclamation mark, and then repeating.

My Lumia 920 should continue to do me for now, but I think the 830 looks decent for price and size. It amazes me that Nokia keep undermining their flagship phones with thick and heavy builds (the 930 being the latest example), when the market clearly prefers thin and light. Hopefully Microsoft have now handed them the memo on this.
