    Great, now I'm hungry. :(

still can't believe they give you a Composite cable instead of HDMI either.

The whole thing looks cheap but is expensive. The first slim (shady) is a nice peice of kit, can't understand why they just didn't knock a few bob of it. I hope you get the choice of the older one as well in the future, i hate for my slim to die and i have to put up with that.

I'd imagine that the reason behind the lack of HDMI cable is that HDTV penetration is still a way off 100%, but i doubt there's a home in the country that doesn't have a telly with those dirty old composite terminals. I'll also hazard a guess that for a console nearing the end of its life cycle its target market is gonna be more along the lines of younger "bedroom gamers" who'll have an old CRT slung in the corner.

I've already said 'R.I.P.' to a phatty and accepted the slim replacement, but if that ever bricks i wouldn't fancy one of those under my telly, eugh.

Meh. I'm still going to get the original slim 320gb one. Disc trays just seem so archaic to me. Plus, I can get one with 3 games and an HDMI cable for the same price off Amazon.

A hands-on article from the fine gentlemen (and women?) at Digital Foundry.

Well yeah, but the PS3 has never been as high as the 360 in the noisy fucker stakes. The disc noise I heard in the IGN video sounds acceptable to me.

I'm disappointed DF didn't tackle the weirdness of the smooth drive opening when vertical but springly clacky crap when horizontal nonsense. Unless IGN got a broken unit, I don't understand how that isn't a manufacturing defect.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

My PS3 is the nosiest piece of electronics I've ever owned.

Apart from the ones that are designed to makes noise.

Would sticking the power brick outside the system, mean that the ps3 would stay cooler and not need the fan to come on as much!?

The launch 360 was great. I live next to a train line and it really helped drown out the noise of passing trains.

I did own a launch 360. My launch PS3 has taken the crown in the last year with its astonishing fan noise. It's been hoovered several times and short of opening the fucker up there's not much can be done.

My slim is a bit louder than my360 slim when playing games*

    * installed to HD and with the 360 power brick hidden behind furniture where it's less audible.

Sony could make the ps3 much quieter but their priority is to claw back money by producing cheap tat :-(

@CharlieStCloud The unboxing videos I posted feature side by side comparisons of the older hardware. Take your pick:
    - Gamespot
    - IGN
    - VideoGamer
    - CVG

More unboxings to be found on Youtube...

Sweet, it's here :) The 500GB model with GT5AE & U3GOTY, to be precise. My very first impression is this: this revision looks and feels quite a lot like a last-gen console which, to me, is good thing. I will admit that the lid feels a bit cheep and gives the impression that it could break easily but I guess time will tell. Other than that, it's obviously smaller and definitely lighter than the regular slim model.
As for the noise it makes: right now I'm transferring data from my old launch ps3 slim to the super slim and the super slim is most definitely quieter! But what really matters is the noise it makes when a game disc is spinning so we'll just have to wait and see...
And oh yes, a friendly reminder for those of you who will also be transferring data from their old console to the new one: a firmware update is required as the super slim doesn't come with 4.25 pre-installed.

    @Fantomex

Hey look at the bright side, at least now when you get the Yellow Light of Death, you'll be able to get the disk out easily without having to take the whole PS3 apart. Trust me on that, I've had it happen 3 times!!

2 weeks in with this new "super slim" model.

Well, it works. Which is its most redeeming feature.

It's a fucking dust magnet. The gloss black finish seems to vacuum dust from every inch of my house (and no I'm not a filthy fecker!).

The whole unit just seems really flimsy, almost entirely plastic, and kind of like a futuristic George Foreman toaster.

    The disc tray is an abomination for three reasons;

    1. its flimsy as hell. How it will last is beyond me.
    2. The lens assembly is front and centre as soon as you open the tray, I can see it becoming prone to disc read issues from lodged dust etc.
    3. If your console sits in a regular AV unit with compartments you will quickly find that a top loading disc drive may become somewhat of a problem (not necessarily bad design, more me not looking into before purchase).

It's also not incredibly quiet, I would go as far as arguing that it is on par if not slightly louder than the normal slim.

    But, it works.

If you are yet to get a ps3, get a normal slim.

If you have a ps3 and were looking to upgrade. Don't.

    Goat is hungry.....

So are these as cheap and flimsy as the internet has led everyone to believe?
