The way of Shadow - Night Angel Trilogy are rather good. I recommended the first book to a friend of mine and he was rather chuffed with the story.

Oblivion: Stories by David Foster Wallace
Nothing to do with the video game. "With the exception of Don DeLillo, no writer better depicts the crushing effect of the information age on the soul."

Over half way through The Shining and about to give up, way too dark for my current mindset. Not the horror aspects but the psychology of Jack is just oppressive to read at times.
Any upbeat/fun/sci fi book recommendations? Love Philip K Dick, Joe Haldemen, Haruki Murukami, that sort of thing.
Bit late replying to this but ready player one is great fun if you havent read it yet

Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart
The Enterprise of Death
The Folly of the World
3 fantastic books by Jesse Bullington, with Grossbarts being a top contender for favourite book so far.
I can't do them justice by explaining them but a quick google search can give you all the information needed.
EDIT: Forum didn't show me it was a very old thread, so yeah, these aren't sci fi.

I could totally understand giving up on Snow Crash, Cyberpunk-ninja-hacker pizza delivery boy... urgh.
The girl with all the gifts is rather good

I recommend novels The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini. I read them for few days. These unputdownable stories grabbed my imagination. Novels are set in Afghanistan, from the fall of the monarchy until the collapse of the Taliban regime. Its many theme includes immigrant experiences of main characters in neighborhood countries, the USA or EU.

Please excuse the shameless self-promotion.
If you're looking for a good book, my own is available for free from today until Sunday.

Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein
Come for the hippy dippy bullshit. Stay for the love of longpork.
How I wish HBO would turn this material into a mini series.
