So what old PC games are still great?

I'm trying to ignore the nostalgia factor here, but I'm in a retro mood and keen to play some of the stuff I used to play in the golden age of PC gaming. (1995-2005 really.) You know, the later Lucasarts stuff, XCom, Total War, Half Life, No One Lives Forever, Simon the Sorcerer, and so on.

Now the Baldur's Gate stuff is obviously still great, but what else is worth playing today? I am sitting here on a 27 inch iMac and as much as I hate to say it I struggle with the old graphics etc, unless a game is trully so superb it overcomes that. (Monkey Island!!!) On such a large screen the blockiness of the older games can frustrate.

Currently I am playing Commander keen (fuck I loved that as a kid) but what else should I try again. Should I install Simon the Sorcerer or will I just find it frustrating in my ADHD 30's? What is great and not just my rosey tinged memory?

Edit: I should say GoG is the best thing ever at this point!

Holy shit! I've just seen there is a Simon the Sorcerer 5! I know the 3rd (3d) was an abomination, but are 4 and 5 worth looking at?

Imperialism II (which was a PC/Mac hybrid) is worth a try. I'd recommend MDK and Heretic 2 as well; their graphics are quite respectable.

I say Project IGI, the first game (the second is crap). For the sound and the music and the good old cold war infiltration feeling without a distracting multiplayer component with thousands of players debating balance and dlc latest news flashing by like it's cnn. You get to play in your own little box. And you can shoot through doors :)

    Couple that spring to mind

Gabriel Knight (first one looks a bit crap these days)
Broken Sword (the "fan made" one is a bit crap)
    Age of Empires
Red Alert / Command and Conquer
    Blade Runner

Glad to see Xcom (UFO) already been mentioned.

Beneath a Steel Sky is another good shout (as is Day of the Tentacle, obviously).

    Also:

    Diablo 1 & 2
    Morrowind
Oblivion (maybe a bit too modern)
    Activision Adventures
    Myst
    Civilization
Sims (cant say I really got into them myself)
Panzer General - Loved this game back in the day. Just a shame I cant get it working on Win 7

    Grim Fandango.
    Uplink.
    Dungeon Keeper.
    Black and White.
    Alpha Centauri.
    Evil Genius.
    Neverwinter Nights.
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
    Freelancer.
    Homeworld.
Galactic Empires II (not technically "old", but retro enough that it feels it).
I have a soft spot for Star Wars: Empire at War.
    Titan Quest.
    Knights of the Old Republic.
    Jade Empire.

I'm a huge Lovecraft geek and have never played this. Definitely one that I have missed in error.

It's excellent. Really scary in places. Might have some jip getting it to run on W7 though, IIRC.

    Neverwinter Nights was awful.

Grim Fandango and Freelancer are musts however.

    I'd mention Max Payne also.

Nah. The story wasn't brilliant (though the expansions were pretty excellent), but some of the mods for it are utterly superb.

Yeah, quite liked this. Some realism points were dropped on occasion (infinite guards in certain outbuildings etc) but very nice gameplay despite that.

I had that, but never got very far, as any time I looked at the map, my character would only be able to move at a snails pace afterwards. It really made the missions drag on.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.
