We support anyone protesting against SOPA and PIPA although we decided not to black out the site.
Hey EG! Why is there no ACTA story on the front page? • Page 2

I think piracy of any kind is a wretched blight on creative people, but I don't believe SOPA/PIPA are good ways of dealing with it for all the reasons everyone's listing and as detailed in the story Bertie wrote the other day.

Hence the blackout.
Wouldn't the enforcement of such legislation and it's effects on business end up far exceeding any losses from piracy?
Also it wouldn't stop piracy, it would just hold anyone responsible for using material copyrighted by one of the supporting corporations. Don't forget that those same corporations are the ones responsible for the proliferation of the software use for piracy.

I strongly believe that in this case you should advertise Eurogamer's beliefs publicly rather than allowing them to be shuttered away.

I'm not suggesting a blackout, but the fact the story is nowhere to be seen is pretty bad.

Registered 8 years agoI'd agree (EDIT: with DB that you should have something pinned to the front page explaining your stance), it's something a big section of your community here feels very strongly about.
Kudos for coming into the thread to respond, though.

Registered 8 years agoI want to know what the fuck google is playing at. They'll change their logo for the birthday of some random cunt nobody has heard of, yet something that threatens the Internet as we know it only gets a small link that most people probably won't notice. Poor showing from the web's most powerful player. -

Protests are still going ahead even though the bill is practically dead? Must have really hit a nerve.

@Dirtbox Our coverage of SOPA hasn't been that great, to be honest. There are a few reasons for that (staff absences at the start of the year in several cases) but I feel like we did a poor job initially. We'll try to catch ourselves up and make more noise about it from now on.

So when you say now, do you mean right now? Because the clocks ticking on this one and if there's a day to start being more forthright about your stance, today is it.

Registered 8 years agoOne of the things all this debate as shown me is that I genuinely have no idea anymore what constitutes copyright infringement. If I post a photo now that is owned by someone else, which kinda means any I didn't take or get from a free stock photo site, is that infringing copyright?
I get that something needs to be done. I get that sites blatantly housing terrabytes of illegally sources films is not good. But this act is so open to interpretation that in this example EG would have to manually ok every post (or just block us posting images like the good ol days
) just to be sure that they are not, via their users, breaking copyright. It's ludicrous. -

Registered 11 years agoThey won't do anything unless they've got lawyers on tap to throw at you, which the people supporting these bills do. In abundance. So in effect it's not protecting anyone but them and this whole thing is a massive abuse of power from the off.
It's literally what happens when you let lawyers rule the world.+1 / Like / Tweet this post
