|There isn't much difference, just it's harder to live with your decisions heh. I beat EU on Classic Ironman AND normal Impossible, but given a couple of bugs regarding missions popping, playing Ironman with EW is a risky business.|

Ugh. Another CI in the bin. A couple of wipeouts where every soldier was in full cover. I thought you didn't get crit hits when in full cover, but it seems you do if the cover gets destroyed too. Maybe it was always that way, and I've just forgotten what a c*nt this game can be.

Any rumours on EW hitting the iPad version? I'm getting so little "proper" game time these days that it'd be pretty sweet. Haven't played the vanilla game for a long time either though, so it's proving to be a pretty nice experience yet again.
One more CI for the bin. This getting critted in full cover thing is super-annoying.
Thought I had one UFO mission completely under control, but got two soldiers critted hiding being full cover trees. Even with just two soldiers left (one Sniper with squadsight) I thought I could do it, but two fucking Seekers appeared and went straight for the Sniper. Bastards!

There are some spikes, but it's fairly gradual and flattens out either side of a mid-game event. If you've played XCOM before. If you haven't, then it'll feel like it spikes quite a bit as new aliens appear. The satellite business is more likely to trip you up.
If you're a new player I have some advice. That is, try to set up choke points and let them come to you as running in with weak units will get you done in quickly, once you have some better soldiers you can be a little more aggressive.
Snipers really come into their own with squad sight. Always choose that ahead of the other option unless you have several snipers.
Try to always be in full cover, also, there are, on every map points that set off the enemy so try not to head into the gloom too quickly.
Satellites are quite key early on, it's not always easy to juggle everything early on but try your best.
Hope all that is some help.
Yeah, will go on for a while. There will be a lull about 80-95% through, however. Shame they couldn't improve that bit in EW also, but I guess they wanted to give some time for you to feel powerful before dicking the aliens one last time.

Any idea if they're ever going to patch EW to sort out the bugs? I've had to abandon 2 Ironman playthroughs because of a corrupted save and the multiple-mission game-breaking bug.
I wanted to hold out until they'd patched it before trying again, but if it's never going to happen I might as well just start a non-Ironman playthrough - even though I lack the willpower to enforce my own Ironman permadeath, so it won't be quite the same.

Just had my xcom base attacked by the little swine and I wasn't expecting it. So 3 of my 6 colonels had their thumbs up their arses in the psy labs, and I was left with 2 colonels fully equipped, and a major and 4 rookies all in their underpants armed with peashooters and rolled up newspapers.
Unbelievably we survived and it was one HELL of an exhilerating ride, certain death most of the time. Just as well Miss Wolf lead sniper from Germany was one of the colonels, 129 aim and 92 kills. She spends her spare time shooting the bollocks off flies for fun.
Medals all round anyway.
The melee mech is great. Hold it in a nice pocket of cover and then run out and bash a big alien. Hurrah! Not as satisfying as a successful pew, but much more reliable.

There's an achievement for completing a Classic or Impossible game with a team of four, which I thought might be a joke initially, but four Mecs could certainly do it.

I love this game so much despite its slightly glitchy combat. I havent got Enemy Within yet but what does it add to the game? Is it worth buying the add-on?
Absolutely, yes. It adds mechs and psy-soldiers and some very interesting levels. One of the best levels in the game is contained in the DLC.
I would definitely do at least one play through before tackling Enemy Within though as all the extra layers of complexity that the new items bring about do confuse research and development somewhat.
@Mr_Sleep Ah so complete a playthrough of EU before EW. Got it, thank dude! I'm currently playing through a classic ironman game. I've done a few missions and unlocked Carapace Armour but I lost my only sniper last night. Stood against a building and two Sectoids cam out of the building opposite. Fully exposed to two critical hits and she was mincemeat. Not even a chance to revive.

Wowzers, ONE sniper? Always bring a rookie to each mission to make sure you have at least 3. Snipers were my favourite class. Double Tap makes the endgame a little easier. Wouldn't have been able to do my Classic Ironman play through without my sniper. As I say earlier in the thread, only had the gifted one and my sniper left at the end. Utterly tense.
I triggered them, then their turn came around and they just demolished me. There was nowhere to run.
Yeah only one Sniper because I've only done 3-4 missions. At the moment I've got 2 support, 2 assault and 1 heavy so I'm still trying to level up a soldier to get the training where new soldiers start leveled up.
I keep meaning to come back and play this again. Brilliant game.
You should never go into uncharted territory on your second move. That way lies disaster. Send an assault or support forward, if you don't trigger anything, edge everyone else forward one by one. Then overwatch.
If you do trigger someone with your first guy, send him back to cover and stick everyone on overwatch.
Yeah I learnt that lesson the hard way. My next mission was a 100% success using this method. Didn't even lose 1 point of health. Took around 15 minutes to find an enemy around the crash site but everyone survived and a few gained a promotion too.
I have one Brit lady on the team who I renamed after my missus. If she dies then I could be in trouble lol
I find the harder the difficulty the more you have to let them come to you. Find some good cover and a good sniper spot with squad sight and it make everything more manageable.
Oh and in line with thread tradition: satellites!
This thread being bumped has made me want to start a new game. I've already done CI so not sure whether to do another for the challenge, or a nice leisurely NI game.
Plus I can't remember what tactics to use. Satellite's early, lasers before armour, maybe an early arc thrower and containment for plasma weapons?

Well I seem to have naffed it up in terms of research. I've got Carapace armour but no laser weapons. Got the arc thrower and captured a Thin Man over the weekend so all I need to do now is interoogate him.
I'm trying to research beam weapons and some other armour and equipment first. I need some more engineers before I can get more satellite uplinks. What's the easiest way to get more engineers?
Got another sniper now but I also have a few more assaults, heavy's and supports too.
@TAJB If you have captured a thin man you can research his weapon and miss out lasers altogether. Although in EW it pays to research lasers. The best path through vanilla EU is capture and research their tech rather than Earth tech as theirs is always better.
As for getting more scientists and engineers, they both have buildings which boost the amount you have but cash resources for that are scarce at first. Personally I always try and go for missions which give engineers or scientists. Engineers are more important than scientists but initially it pays to have scientists do you can get the alien tech sooner.
I always found the balancing act of the base building and resource allocation tricky for the first few months.
