@RedSparrows Agreed. Some end-game/post-game optional challenges would be bloody excellent. Like a challenge mode with interesting and awesome rewards for your best squad would be cool, for example.

If it is one criticism I do have of Xcom that hasn't changed for this one it is indeed the pacing you've mentioned. It is a very front loaded game, I'm right near the end but rather than get to the final level I am waiting for missions to level up my psionic trooper.

I think the arrival of the mutons is almost perfect in most games as you're just getting things together and they appear but some of the other pacing is just a bit off. I recall in both my previous play throughs I had just got the firestorm up and running in a couple of countries and then I finished the game.

This classic run through has been different in that regard but it seems like there's just something a bit off about the run to the final mission.

You are a factory of sadness.

Mutons and Heavy Floaters appear at a good time, I think.

I think the problem is then that Elites, Ethereals and Sectopods appear, and have seriously nasty gear, skills and armour, but by that time your sniper can nuke any of them in one go, let alone your MEC trooper with two shot blue-beam death cannon, or your assault with CQC skills and an Alloy Cannon, etc etc, all with 13+ hp.

Obviously you can still cock up, and the feeling of power is great as a reward. I guess, short of playing Impossible/Ironman, where you'd never ever get to that stage, there's just a slight 'sag' in challenge.

Trouble is that if you've had a hard early game, and lost your most powerful troops, the difficulty becomes immense and the option to just restart becomes very attractive. There's little option for rebuilding your troops, because you'll be facing top alien scum.

Love the idea of a challenge mode.

Thin Men are super deadly at the start; I assume due to their accurate light plasmasÖ? But I love that if they appear later on I can just kill the shit outta them- pure revenge. Increasing numbers probably would give them longevity, I suppose!

I've made a huge mistake and downloaded this for iOS as it's gone back down to £6.99 (which I assume is for Black 'Friday'Ö?).

I fully expect to have lost my girlfriend, job and general health by the end of the week.

Traded in EU and bought EW on 360 last week. Was having an absolute blast going through a normal/ironman campaign. Bloody amazing until I my save file corrupted after the mission where you board the giant UFO. After a little research I found out that this was fairly common.

Restarted regardless, had an even better time, held my breath all the way during the UFO mission, this time... success... no corrupted save. Unfortunately, I got another bug 2 missions later when multiple missions appeared at the same time. After completing one it all goes dodgy when I get back to base - it doesn't seem to know if a mission is ending or starting and just freezes after some dialogue.

So another ironman attempt down the drain. That's about 20 hours wasted. I've contacted 2K to find out if there's a patch on the way but they haven't been too helpful. Don't think I want to touch it until it' sorted and I don't want to play without ironman enabled. Anyone else had these problems? Anyone know if there's a fix on the way?

I'm finding EW silly hard. My normal stragery is to build a sat ASAP and then another 2 by the end of the 2nd month. However I just lost one game when I was facing nutons, thin men and seekers while still armed with default equipment.

Am I focusing too much on long term? Should I give up on income and rush the initial equipment? How does everybody else manage?

    What a game
Heh, I did that one last night. Managed to escape with the whole squad on the very last turn - after killing about 20 of 'em!!!
Did this the other day. Fair to say I didn't see it coming. My first try went very sour indeed - got 2 soldiers out but they were the least valuable ones. Fortunately had a save at the half way point (not playing Ironman) so tried the extraction again. Basically I had to sacrifice two soldiers in order to buy the others time to escape. The last survivor jumped into the Skyranger with three Chrysalids on his tail. Another one of those SF movie moments.

Thin Men & Seekers are not too bad early doors, pick Mutons off as soon as you trigger them and they shouldn't give you too much trouble. Don't bunch up your squad due to them using 'nades - and try to destroy their cover with 'nades before attacking.

As for the sats / research / equipment I do the same as you - one in the air by the end of Month 1 and another 2 the following month. I usually prioritise weapons over facilities as there's no point having decent facilities if everyone's dead!!

I really want to give my shiv a medal, but you can't. That little tin can (not the alloy one, the basic model) is amazing, he's made almost every shot, got the team out of trouble so many times. In that canada mission the poor little schmuck took point, and somehow came out alive albeit with a few dents in the paintwork. Well rather a lot of dents actually....

Pipe to climb beside the tear in the hull. Stairs are on the other side.

My sentiments exactly. Resigned myself to sacrificing a brave, heroic rookie to run upstairs, while the established team settle back. Still haven't quite got it to work. :(

I'm playing it in Ironman and I've reached the last level. Due to circumstances I've only got 2 soldiers I've been using, the rest are all rookies. As it works out you just get thrown into the last level unprepared. So I get 2 soldiers I can actually fight with and the rest are just instant death. I didn't even get a chance to equip them with any armour or weapons, so they are all standard equipment. Pretty useless. This makes the last level impossible and as it's in Ironman mode I have to play the whole game again to get back here. Game ruined I'm afraid

You don't get thrown into the last level unprepared, a big warning box pops up basically saying "This is the end of the game, there's no going back if you click ok!"

Oh ok, I don't remember that. I stand corrected. I was using 4 Goliaths though, to make up for my barebones staff, and they just vanish

They only vanish if you use that strip equip command, don't they?

An assault with extra movement and close quarters specialism is the way to go for that kind of situation, also good for making a dash to the meld. Assault was already rather good but seems to have come into its own in EW.

Yep, but getting the Assault pro back is the problem. Just can't outrun the buggers. Rk. Lim will prove his worth !

    Off you go."

I lost a very good assault trooper - she who pressed the button. I think, without the whole squad moving up close, and thus putting the whole squad in grave danger, you're gonna lose a trooper or two.

Just a quick note some of you might appreciate...

I was struggling with Enemy Within for quite a while due to the sheer number of missions, strength of the enemies and piss poor aim of even my best units.

Having just completed the Hyperwave relay I was down to five experienced units and a bunch of rookies (and this is after many reloads).

Only then did I realize I was playing on 'Classic'.

I have now knocked the game down to 'Normal' and while it's certainly less frustrating, it's perhaps too easy.

So many tactical options (smoke / suppression / flanking) become practically irrelevant.

    It's a shame there isn't a intermediary level really, a New Game+ might work.

I'm really liking assaults now, far more than EU. Double fire shotguns with reaper rounds, plus bonus close quarter over watch murder seekers and even chrisialids with basic shotguns.

The lack of snipers in my run though has forced a complete change in playing style. Rather than sitting back Iím being more aggressive and using two assaults with shotties. Itís only gone wrong onceÖÖ.

Iíve only generated one sniper this run though so far but four assaults. Having that sniper (90+ aim) one-shotted by a sodding Sectoid while behind cover wasnít a great moment. Very glad Iím playing Ironman otherwise I would have re-loaded and having no sniper has forced me to play differently and Iím really enjoying it.

This. I'm playing on Normal (Ironman) and it's not even worth bothering with proper tactics, as my squad of hardmen kill pretty much everything as soon as they see it. CBA to do Classic, though, as I know from EU that it's more hard work than actual fun.

    Somewhere in-between would be perfect.

9 Snipers, 1 Heavy, 2 Supports and 1 Assault. Chang too, but yep, slightly hampered to say the least.
