Aye, my Impossible runs have hinged on the first Council mission... and then always gone down in flames when trying to get to the Alien Base.

So I started a new Classic Ironman and I just had what would have been a very useful VIP mission go awry, my assault soldier panicked after being poisoned and took him out with a shotgun, for some reason she can't usually hit shit with her shotgun but it was a perfect shot on him, not forgetting that there were two soldiers in the way that she could have shot. Fuck you classic!
    :D

Top tip: All combatants become strangely accurate when panicked. As such I never go for that psi option of sending an opponent into a panic.

Yeah, it is funny, some times it even works in your favour too! I emoquit so I might just avoid it on a restart but I doubt it, if I don't then I might well restart as I fucked a few things up and had a really shitty base arrangement with only one steam vent!

You are a factory of sadness.

I may go back to trying Impossible (the only cheevo I don't have), but any tips for getting through the very first mission of the game? I can't make it past that currently, and I got through C/I relatively okay...!

Lie with passion and be forever damned...

Patience, care and close attention, seeking every advantage the game allows you. I gave up after doing a bomb defusal in a railway station. I got through it Ok, but it took sooooo long. I'd rather play more Civ or take a piece out of some unfinished games.

@Mr_Sleep Yeah, it often did for me! I (mostly) don't mind the game being bugged, but that could be quite irritating. It finished my last 'one man' achievement attempt because the last alien alive had panicked often enough to somehow become super-accurate.

I restarted CI many times, looking for a good base. It's worth it.

This is a much bigger deal that I had imagined, I was just expecting a bunch of DLC maps!

Damn, something else I've got to find time to fit in before I get new kit!

I think you're right, I have been putting myself in Asia, mostly for the early Officer Training School.

I decided to persevere as after a reload I was able to move the assault trooper away and all was well. That was until I faced a "very difficult" mission that would have seen me reduce the terror levels away from red and hopefully turn it around a bit more, however I had the most unlucky mission so far on this run and it led to a squad wipe.

I'm persevering again because I have just about enough troopers but it's pretty much done now I think. Time for another one, I seem to have rediscovered the love.

You are a factory of sadness.

Woot! I am very much looking forward to the XCom base attack, it was something I was waiting for throughout the entire first playthrough of Enemy Unknown.

Strategy is usually the genre I like the least, because I'm incompetent as a strategist. But I felt strangely compelled to buy this game. To my surprise, I'm liking it a lot.

Is it normal to lose the support of at least one country during your playthrough? I couldn't get Nigeria to calm the fuck down, and they withdrew from XCOM. Now there's a dark spot on the hologlobe that has got me worried. I'm wondering if that's going to bite me in the ass in the long run.

What is the most effective way to keep panic levels down? As usually happens when I try to play a strategy game, I feel like I'm investing in the wrong things.

Yes, losing countries is to be expected. You can't be everywhere at once. Best way to keep the council and the funding countries happy is to get satellites up as soon as you can. I always have at least one in the pipe to launch just before the council report.

Oh, and losing countries will generate less income and scientist, but as long as you don't lose 8 you'll be able to keep on fighting.

HOLY MOLY. having played this through once on my 360, and once on the Ipad, I pray that they release this new edition on Ipad as well. nothing beats the convenience of being able to smash through 4 hours on the train on the way to scotland, in what seems like the blink of an eye.
