Also, please don't misuse the word journalist. They're reporters and enthusiast writers. There's no journalistic merit to 90% of the stuff on this site.

Some of those Sunday retrospectives were, however - and tellingly, they weren't written by staff.
I thought you did on vg247.

Gaming "journalism" is often embarassingly bad but I think you are being unfair on this site.

Don't get me wrong, he can write. He's one of the best game writers in the industry. But subjective opinion is subjective opinion. Why he's using EG as a platform for what appears to be a personal crusade on his part is beyond me.

He has no empirical evidence to back up any his arguments in his latest piece. He has no quotes from anyone in the industry, there's no research, no data, just Tom banging a drum. On a site that goes out to, and has the potential to influence, literally millions of people I think he's being irresponsible and reactionary.

You can't be asked to be taken seriously a journalist and then put out impassioned prose that has no balance and no foundation. That's GCSE English.

Subjective opinion in an opinion piece. Fuck me.
  • Deleted user 21 June 2013 17:26:43
Yeah, the entire article is basically supposition. The whole thing can be pretty much reduced down to "I DON'T THINK THAT WILL HAPPEN".

Nobody has used empirical evidence in any camp, because there isn't any for what Microsoft was proposing.

While I agree with all of Bramwell's suppositions, it is kind of blog stuff.
  • Deleted user 21 June 2013 17:32:30
True, but you can't really title a piece "analysing the backlash" when there's not really any analysis. But it's also kind of the context of the piece as well, it's basically just reiterating what he's said in the other two (three?) opinion columns, only in a slightly rejigged format. At this point it just seems like preaching to the choir.
  • Deleted user 21 June 2013 17:33:02
Morriss wouldn't have a single negative word to say if the piece was on how MS's DRM strategy is good for the industry so it is hard to take him seriously.

I've felt for a while that EG have been going a bit over the top with a number of articles and the endless doom-mongering, not just with the XB1, but obviously thats been taking the flak lately.

Just a suggestion, but this latest article could have been a roundtable discussion of the pros and cons rather than a one-sided backlash against some 'comments' plucked from the ether.

To be fair, as well, they've just put up an article that seems to be leaning in favour of always-connected open-world games. Which suffer from the exact same "these won't really be playable in the far future" problem that Tom rallied against in his other articles. Different authors and all that, but they just look odd next to each other.

First there's conflict in MS, now there's infighting at EG. When will the bickering end?

It'll be Civil War before we know it. Maybe all the outliers will migrate to US Gamer.

It should be a good console war, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do in 2188 for the septaquintaquinquecentennial anniversary of it.

As if 3 separate consoles weren't enough to pull gamers apart now we have camps within camps.

    Kinect.

    1. I don't want to be shouting "Xbone on!" in the wee hours of the morning after a skinful. I am considerate of other people in that way.

    2. XBone will automatically log you in when it sees you. What if I just nipped into the room to grab a beer from the fridge and get the fuck out?

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

I thought the articles by Tom were sort of like playing devils advocate, representing a prevailing point of view among gamers, though not necessarily his own opinion, writing something that is relevant to the audience, a little controversial and umm, yeah the site is not just for presenting news and relaying press releases. Opinionated articles are interesting and stimulate discussion and page views.

    1. You can use the controller if you want to turn it on and be quiet. If you're steaming and can't help yourself, that's not Microsoft's fault.

    2. Kinect only logs you in when the Xbox is turned on. If it is on and you didn't mean to get logged in it doesn't do much until you pick up the controller.

It could be a real problem for me as I like to shout "Bone on!" to get an erection and will my Xbox One turn on and film me and send it to the internet?

We're celebrating 75 years of Batman - and here's my look back at Rocksteady's Arkham series.

Looks like I'm going to need to get Gold then.

All it's going to take is a few fake YouTube vids of Kinect monitoring and things will go totally batshit crazy.

GCHQ have apparently been caught writing code that'll interface with the Kinect camera in order to monitor you...

    Link
