No, just a bit of text saying "You are a fading from existence." At least the couple I've walked myself into anyway. Perhaps there's one eluding me were a jealous ex-girlfriend goes on a murdering spree, and takes the main character's dismembered head on a love cruise.

Well, I mean, there's rarely any "point" to them (or, at least, to all of them). You're doing it... just to do it, to see the various ways you can die.

Eh, some games give you clues and titbits and extra chunks of story in bad ends but like consignia I can't say I noticed much in F/E. Might have missed it in my 'noo, I've got to redo the repetitive battle section' woe though.

Some do, sure, but a lot of them it is just "hahahaha, did you see XXX's face get torn off in that one?".

Fate/EXTRA is out now on PSN for 23.99. It's also available on Vita if that's what floats your boat :)

This is reduced to 9.99/8.99(PS+) at the mo. Worth it?

@santashi never heard of this but tempted now. No decent reviews anywhere though. All they say is visual novel. What's it like?

Defeat is not getting knocked down, but refusing to get back up.

@OmniaVincitAmor Definitely not a visual novel (that's Fate/Stay Night, which is incidentally available for the Vita-in Japan). A Persona vibe in some ways, partly due to the school setting.

The story is intriguing as are the characters, generally. Your character has amnesia (gosh), and finds themself taking part in the Grail War, where each week they must battle through a labyrinth, achieve certain objectives, then fight one of the participants (surprises do happen, though!). They do this through their servant, a mythical/historical/misc hero who fights for them. You can pick from the Saber, Archer and Caster classes in this game, but there is more variety amongst your opponents. Gender swaps aplenty, which might fox you to start with.

When not in the dungeons you can wander through the school, talk to people (following little side stories, getting advice, etc), stock up on items, and build a relationship with your servant (who are they?...)

I'd say the weakest point is the battle system (pretty much rock/paper/scissors), which can feel repetitive if you try to do a long play session (or die and have to repeat a section). Most enemies have only so many set patterns that they follow. More fun is trying to find out information about your opponent for the week, as understanding their servant can turn the boss of the week from a nightmare into something manageable.

I'm so slow at iPod typing...

@santashi thanks for the depth. Shit tempted now. Have to get trails obv. But this really intrigues me. Fucking vita. I have sooooo many games for it now :)

Persona 2 is another one where the characters and story are amazing but the battles (due mainly to frequent random encounters in P2's case) are less so. And is also on sale. Just saying. ;)

But yep, Fate/Extra is definitely worth snapping up, in my opinion.

dominalien-There are a few Fate series fighting game spinoffs. I loved Fate/Tiger Colosseum on the PSP. Played it loads.

Ah, OK. Must have got F/E confused with one of those.
